Ok as the other topic said, I am planning to purchase a new computer sometime soon. We have Windows 98 on the old machine and I don't want to throw it out just yet. I need Internet Explorer 6/5.5 for web page testing and obviously I can't run both Windows Internet Explorer 7 and 6 on Windows XP. So I am planning to transfer the entire hard drive over to the new system. A few issues though: Will Windows 98 with such "powerful" components? System has 512MB RAM, Intel Pentium 4 3GHz processor, 7.1 sound card, integrated video card and DVD+RW burner are the main components that are much different from the current Windows 98 system. I don't want drives exploding or processors burning up.  Also, is it as easy as unplugging the hard drive and plugging it into the other system? I was hoping I didn't have to reformat ANYTHING because the only reinstallation CD that I have is the OEM CD and I do not want it wiping out Windows XP, Ubuntu or my other partitions. Is dual-boot configurable with 2 drives? I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

lol, of course Windows 98 would run on your system. I would just run it in VMWare if I were you, so you also run two systems at once. xboxrulz

Wow Windows 98, I remember that, kind of. Unfortunately things are not quite as easy as just throwing the old hard drive into the new computer. As for the physical properties of the old hardware, as long as you have the proper connectors in the new computer you will not have any problems. Absolutely no worries of your hard drive blowing up. The software side is not as easy. When Windows installs for the first time it installs drivers for your specific motherboard and processor. If you put the old hard drive in the new computer then it will start the boot process, Windows will load the drivers for the old hardware and quickly blue screen. Windows 98 is not as forgiving as the later versions of Windows to new base hardware. My suggestion would be to reinstall it. Better yet I would scrape and scrounge to get a copy of XP. 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft and security is a concern now. I did hear of a quick fix for 98 but I have never tried it before. You delete one of system driver folders and restart. Supposedly when you restart, 98 sees that it’s missing the drivers and reinstalls them but this time for the new hardware. It sounds very tricky and I certainly wouldn’t do this without having everything ready for a clean install anyway. Search Google for the details and note that this does not work on 2000 or XP. As for your dual setup, you should be able to reinstall only to your Window partition and the Ubuntu partition will be fine. Just be sure to make a note of which partition belong to which OS.

Additionally... since you said you dual-booted with linux... have you thought about installing an older version of MSIE there? then you could save the hassle of even having windows98.... and the older versions tend to run a bit better under wine anyways... i've heard of some compatibility issues with IE7 and wine anyways... just a thought

Tranfer of files from Windows 98 First Edition to Windows XP Home Edition
Windows 98 Transfer
I have a Gateway desktop computer that I bought in 1998. It has a GenuineIntel Celeron Processor @ 333MHz (blazing speed), Cache RAM of 128 KB with Intel MMX Technology; 64.0 MB RAM and is equipped with Windows 98 First Edition and the USB Controller in the “Device Manager” section says the USB Controller is an “Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller”. I am positive it has a USB 1.0 port. I have about 4 gigabytes of various files on this Gateway that I would like to transfer to my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. The Dell has an AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56, 1.79GHz, 896 MB of RAM and is equipped with Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 and the USB Controllers in the “Device Manager” section say, “Standard Enhance PCI to USB Host Controller” and below that it says, “Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller”. I am positive it has a standard USB 2.0 port. I am hoping that someone knows of a USB to USB Data Transfer Cable that will work with the Windows 98 First Edition I have on my Gateway and the Windows XP Home Edition I have on my Dell. I have been searching for one but so far it has been in vain. Any help you could give me would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance for any assistance with this conundrum.

Well I wasn't looking to transfer data between computers with Windows 98, but I have decided not to use Windows 98 anyways because I don't want to support IE6 on my sites any more.

Downgrade Windows MCE To XP?

Someone is having so much problems with this machine and I think it's the Operating System

Windows Not Recognizing Ipod
(33) OK, I'm running Windows XP and my iPod is not detected when I plug it in. The only things that
I could guess are wrong are that I recently had a trojan, known as BackDoor-AWI and that my router
