| | Unix is popular operating system, developed by AT&T. It is not an open source. But Linux is an open source operating system. So users can modify the kernel and other things to their own desires. Ex:Redhat, Fedora, Susee, Mandrake . . . are some available linux operating systems
Unix is the foundation for a number of operating systems, Linux is one of them, and probably the most popular. |

Well, in addition, I can quote a little part from the README file from the official Linux kernel: QUOTE Linux is a Unix clone written from scratch by Linus Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the Net. It aims towards POSIX compliance. And as it was said, Linux is just a kernel, the distribution includes everything else, GUI and stuff.. and Linux can run on an x86 architecture, the old unix as I know requires a mainframe.. For example, were was Unix like systems and DOS like systems, from them we have one of the most popular unix based system Linux and from DOS we have Windows, even though Windows weren't an OS till NT, it was considered a DOS with a GUI till Windows 2000 appeared.. of course we also had different architectures operating systems like Amiga OS and Risc OS, even though they are still used, but not as much as other mentioned above, somewhere I would need to include Apple too, but I never read to much about the past of Macintosh. A more simple question would be what is the difference between DOS and Linux, it would be easier to answer

Also, a point to add here is that UNIX is the next common base for operating systems after Windows NT. MacOS X, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Xenix and a whole lot more!) Linux is just a clone of UNIX, but contains 0 UNIX kernel code. xboxrulz

Replying to pixelsmackMach is a kernel. All Linux and Unix have a kernel and protective layers wrapped around it. All have a tool set. Both Linux and Unix are operating systems. The major Unix release types included Posix, BSD, System III, and System V. It was designed at universities funded by grants from the Department of Defense (DOD) to create an omni centralized missile defense operating system and internet. Linus stole the design of Unix and all its commands slightly different, and then renamed it egomaniacally after himself. Minux did the same way before Linus came along. Just like its predecessor, it has '1000 flavors of vanilla'. RedHat is a commercialized release of Linux just as Solaris was of Unix. Incidentally, Solaris topped AIX (Unix from IBM), HP-UX (Unix from Hewlett-Packard). The Tektronix version included BSD and SYSV command sets, as do most releases now. You can find more than one of the same tool on many releases that each behave and take options differently (e.G., "ps -aux" and "ps -edalf"). Best wishes, Chris gray Sr. Sw engineer (a dinosaur predating the WWW and GUIs)

Differences Between Linux and Unix
What\'s The Difference Between Linux And Unix?!?
The major differences: Linux is free, while many UNIX, are very expensive. Linux runs on many hardware platforms. In contrast, a typical UNIX is proprietary-hardware-bonded (and this hardware tends to be much more expensive than a typical PC clone). With Linux, you are in charge of your computer, whereas on most UNICES you are typically confined to be an "l-user". Some UNICES may be more mature in certain areas such as security, some engineering applications. Linux is more for the average person who wants to run his own server or engineering workstation. -reply by SaranyaRajaram

What's The Difference Between Linux And Unix?!? I want to know the basic and major difference between unix and linux in detail
-Devesh Linux was developed by college student Linus Torvald. He was in fact developed the free OS by taking features from UNIX. As UNIX was developed by AT&T and it’s very costly to buy and maintain, Linus Torvald developed similar OS with basic architecture and he released this for free in forum. Then number of people inspired by this free OS and contributed to its development. Now Linux is giving computation to Microsoft.

diff b/w unix & Linux
What's The Difference Between Linux And Unix?!?
Command-line-wise,
Almost none, although this has been changing (for better or worse). Linux has a
Much larger market appeal and following than any commercial UNIX. GUI-wise
There are also no major differences--Linux, as most other UNIXes, uses an
X-Windowing system.
The major differences:
- Linux is free, while many UNICES (this is supposed to
be the plural of UNIX), are very expensive. The same for
applications--many good applications are available on Linux free. Even the
same commercial application (if you wanted to buy one) typically costs
much more for a commercial UNIX than for Linux.
- Linux runs on many hardware platforms, the commodity
Intel-x86/IBM-spec personal computers being the most prominent. In
contrast, a typical UNIX is proprietary-hardware-bonded (and this hardware
tends to be much more expensive than a typical PC clone).
- With Linux, you are in charge of your computer, whereas
on most UNICES you are typically confined to be an "l-user"
(some administrators pronounce it "loser").
- Linux feels very much like DOS/Win in the late 80s/90s,
but is much sturdier and richer, while a typical UNIX account feels like a
mainframe from the 60s/70s.
- Some UNICES may be more mature in certain areas (for
example, security, some engineering applications, better support of
cutting-edge hardware). Linux is more for the average Joe who wants to run
his own server or engineering workstation.

Choice Of Motherboard For Linux Virtualization
Who knows which ones work well? (6) Virtualization is a relatively arcane subject, but it is one which is very rapidly growing, and
apparently very "hot" in commercial enterprises. For the hobbyist with multiple computers (I have

saves energy. Second, once the conversion has been made from real hardware to a virtual "guest,"
the driver problems associated with moving from one hardware platform to another are sol....

What Is Linux
Introduction to Linux (2) QUOTE "Linux" generally refers to an open-source Unix-clone operating system based on the Linux
kernel, written from scratch originally by Linus Torvalds and other smart people from across the
web. Although the linux kernel, which interfaces with a computer's hardware, is the core of the
operating system, many other programs are needed to form a complete operating system. Various
commercial and non-commercial groups produce Linux-based operating systems containing the kernel,
all necessary programs, and an installer. These different versions of linux are referr....
