I am currently undergoing a process of - as far as at all possible - replacing payware with freeware on my PCs. Here are some interesting tools I found while scouring the web for freeware:
Process Lasso is a unique new technology intended to automatically adjust the allocation of CPU cycles so that system responsiveness is improved in high-load situations. It does this by dynamically temporarily lowering the priorities of processes that are consuming too many CPU cycles, there-by giving other processes a chance to run if they are in need. This is useful for both single and multi-core processors. No longer will a single process be able to bring your system to a virtual stall. In addition, Process Lasso offers capabilities such as default process priorities, default process CPU affinities, termination of disallowed processes, and logging of processes executed. With Process Lasso you essentially create rules to manage processes running on your system.
Fiddler is a HTTP Debugging Proxy which logs all HTTP traffic between your computer and the Internet. Fiddler allows you to inspect all HTTP Traffic, set breakpoints, and "fiddle" with incoming or outgoing data. Fiddler includes a powerful event-based scripting subsystem, and can be extended using any .NET language. Fiddler is freeware and can debug traffic from virtually any application, including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and thousands more.

The NirSoft web site provides a unique collection of small and useful freeware utilities:
TextSTAT is a simple program for the analysis of texts. It reads ASCII/ANSI texts (in different encodings) and HTML files (directly from the internet) and it produces word frequency lists and concordances from these files. This version includes a web-spider which reads as many pages as you want from a particular website and puts them in a TextSTAT-corpus. The new news-reader puts news messages in a TextSTAT-readable corpus file.
CrossLoop simplifies the process of securely working with friends located in different physical locations and across different network environments. CrossLoop enables you to see the screen and control the mouse and keyboard on a remote computer. It is as if you are working side by side at the same PC.

Thanks for sharing this freeware, and well i only say that from your list i only know fiddler and the nirsoft website that has a lot of useful freewares, the other ones i think that are really interesting and deserves a try.
Didn't know any of these sites before, thanks for sharing . I've switched from payware to freeware a few years ago and I must say I haven't had any problems since. Of course you've got to get used to the new software, but once you know them you sometimes don't want to switch back to the payed alternatives (mostly because the payed alternative don't offer anything more than the freeware).
I never heard about Process Lasso or software like that on windows, it brought my attention.. I'll try to use it and maybe I'll feel that it isn't one of those programs which aren't relevant for anything, except is using space on my hdd.

I've been talking this sort of thing over in another thread, and thought it would be useful if I
put a download link here. Revo Uninstaller is a great little bit of freeware that can clean your
registry, cookies, temporary files and a load of other things. It's small in size and free
forever (or so I believe), so you could definitely try it out. To date I've got no complaints

I am currently using the freeware version of CamStudio to create screencast videos, which I then
convert to FLV, and I post the FLV movies on the intranet at work. I am happy with the video quality
of these videos. However with CamStudio I have a small problem with the spacebar. It is the default
command key to stop the screen recording, and I although I looked everywhere, I couldn't find
where I can change this. I sometimes need to write stuff in text fields and text boxes, and it is

Hey guys, I came across this terrific FREEWARE tool called Sandboxie that can run almost any
given program in a virtual sandboxed space and revert your system back to the original state it was
in, once you terminate the program. For instance, when you surf using your favourite browser

Please assist me, O Astahost gurus! I just got a data cable to connect my LG CG225 cell phone to my
computer through a USB port so that I can transfer audio and image files back and forth without
using my cell to connect to the internet and thereby pay fees. The cable works fine, but the
software that came with it (Mobile Action) doesn't work. I was able to go to the MA website and
find an updated driver and management software for my phone, but that software will only allow me to
send SMS messages (without attached audio files or images) and to sync up my contact....

Hi all, I made a software called SM NoteThis! a while back and I do not update it mainly because
I've given up on C. It makes quick jotting down notes and doesn't require much time at all
to start up. It is a small (less than 40kb in size!) and works only for Windows 95R2 and up
(including Windows XP). The help file says that there is going to be a print function in v2.2, but
I'm not gonna release that as I'm not updating it anymore. Maybe, just maybe if it becomes

Hi all, It has not been long since I used Pixia, but now I am quite used to it. It has a bit of
odd interface, but once you get the hang of it, one can get amazing results. (See my webcomic post:
Firman Tales ). It is not as good as Paint Shop Pro, but one should not complain as it is free.

I am looking for a freeware application to convert fonts between different formats. Mainly I need
one to convert Mac fonts to PC fonts and/or Opentype (new cross-platform format). I do alot of
freelance design work and work between Mac and PC alot, and the font issue is really becomming a
frustrating problem. I was using a trial version of the newest Crossfont and that worked perfectly,
but the trial ended. I suppose when I get some money I can buy Crossfont or Transtype, but for the
time being I really can't afford it. Does anyone know of a freeware application....

Nedwolf's Portable Freeware has a very good collection of software that one can carry around
on one's USB Key or flash card etc. The main benefit of software such as this you don't have
to go around installing it . Just plug in your external storage medium and run it off the disk.
Browsing the site, I came across yet another site whith the same concept in mind -
PortableFreeware.com But what if the remote host doesn't have a USB port or rather an
available USB port? Well, you can upload it to a storage site online like your GMail account or

I found a free ear training soft that is rather good, though sadly windows only. There are two
versions, basic and advanced. They are both free, and advanced just takes over after you have
mastered basic (which could take quite a while if you have terrible ears like I do).

Get bored about time to wait while loading Acrobat Reader 6 ? There is an efficient tool, and
this is a freeware. As we know, Acrobat Reader takes 16 Mo on a hard drive, and take a "certain
time" to be ready (ie we wait a lot when it starts ! That's because this software loads, while
starting, a great sum of modules -wich are not really usefull usually !-). Then,while surfing on
