| | Hey, i got a Ubuntu LiveCD and it works perfectly. Seems like a good change from Windows from time to time.
The only problem i am having is that i cant find some files that are on my C:/ drive (the Windows area) - although i can see them through windows no problem. Example is that when i go to the documents and settings folder on the C drive, no folders are there. When i go back to windows, its there!
Can someone please tell me how can i see my files via ubuntu. I am quite a newbie to Ubuntu so please excuse me if this is a n00b question |

Like with all dual-boots, they share the /swap area.

sorry i don't understand. I have NOT installed Ubuntu on my computer therefore i have not have a duel-boot on my computer - I just have Windows Vista Ultimate. I just like using it through the LiveCD and through the LiveCD i wish to view my files on that folder mentioned on my previous post but it seems that the folders inside the Documents and Settings are missing. My question is how can i view these folders that appear on Windows but not on Ubuntu.

I recently got my live cd in the mail as well, (7.04 feisty fawn) and I split my 20 gig hard drive in half, so I can dual boot windows xp and ubuntu. For some reason I can view my files in windows xp from ubuntu.. I've been reading on other forums as well and for some reason I shouldn't be able too. If I were you I would just make another partition and keep all your documents on it, so both ubuntu and windows xp can see it. For me I have another 40 gig internal hard drive to keep all my files. Installing ubuntu is way easier than any of the older versions and is way simpler too, I recommended just installing ubuntu rather than using the live cd, unless you have a really fast cd drive it will be slow.

First off, congrats on picking up the ubuntu live cd I'd actually reccomend installing it and dual booting, but thats just because I love ubuntu Alright, as far as windows files are concerned if you have your windows partition set up using an ntfs file system I imagine thats the cause (and thats the normal file system choice for windows nowadays). Ubuntu CAN see ntfs files by default (Laurence, if you read you shouldn't be able to it was wrong, or at least not talking about the last few versions of ubuntu). Ubuntu cannot however EDIT or SAVE to ntfs by default (unless that changed in Fiesty but I dont think it did). I'm pretty sure there is experiemental stuff to allow linux to write to ntfs but I'm not sure how reliable it is yet, I've heard mixed reports and haven't tried it myself. A good way to share files between the two is making a small fat32 partition. Both can read/write to it fine (windows and ubuntu I mean) and it wouldn't really affect your overall HD space for either. However if you are only livecd'ing maybe this is overkill. Its weird that you can see files but certain folders aren't showing up. Are you sure its not shortcuts? Those should still show up but meh, just an idea. I'd reccomend checking the ubuntu forums, they are obscenely helpful and the community is great. They've helped me on numerous ubuntu related curiosities in the past. good luck

Jeigh, thank you so much for your concern. Yeah my partition is on the NTFS system and ubuntu does read the drive but only some of the files are not showing up which is why i don't understand. And those files that are missing are not shortcut files, they are actual files such as .doc and .mp3. I know i can try to create a new partition but i was hoping i can use the Livecd so (just incase) i can retrieve my files if there was a virus on my computer or the computer can't boot onto Windows. But thanks again, it was really helpful and i will check out the ubuntu forums aswell

What tyfoon mentioned about using the LiveCD in case there's no way to boot onto Windows is exactly what happened to me. My Vista Ultimate crashed for some reason and I can't boot it up again, so right now I'm using the ubuntu LiveCD. I'm planning to backup all my important files to my external hard drive and then format my hard drive. The problem is, I can't backup my Mozilla Firefox favorites because they're in the Documents and Settings folder and I can't see anything in the Documents and Settings folder. Does anyone know if there's any way to enable viewing of the files in the Documents and Settings folder? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

how to reinstall GRUB after windows reinstall (9) Ok so for a long time I had my dual boot working great, windows and ubuntu. But 2 days ago my
windows required a wipe and clean install because of some issues, like it usually happens after 8
months. So I reinstalled windows, well, first deleted the windows partition using the windows XP

intact. But of course, windows deletes GRUB and replace it with their boot info, so now I can't

Review About Ubuntu 7.10

With Wubi The Hard Drive Does Not Have To Be Repartitioned Before The Ubuntu Installation
(2) Wubi is an Ubuntu installer for Windows that lets you install and uninstall Ubuntu from a Windows
desktop. Wubi adds an entry to the Windows boot menu which allows you to run Linux. Ubuntu is
installed within a file in the Windows file system (a loopmounted partition), this file is seen by
Ubuntu as a real hard disk. That way the hard drive does not have to be repartitioned before the
Ubuntu installation. The resulting Ubuntu installation is a "real" Linux system, not just a virtual
machine. Wubi makes it easy for Linux newbies to play around with Ubuntu. http://wubi-i....
