| | I used msconfig to delete a couple non-essential programs from the startup. I've done this many times before and never had problems with it. However, the other day I tried it and when I rebooted my computer, almost nothing worked. Flash drives wouldn't recognize, the sound card in device manager was supposedly working properly, but if i tried to play anything it would tell me there was no sound card installed. The system slowed to a crawl, my virus scan, firewall, and pgp wouldn't start. I repaired the installation off of the original windows cd, and it fixed the sound problem, but then my network wouldn't show up, and device manager was a total blank. I happened to go into services.msc and there I found that every single thing was disabled. How on earth does something like that happen, and how can i prevent it from happening. It cost me hours of work to try and fix, and if i would have gotten any more frustrated, i probably would have resorted to a clean install. |

Grafitti, You didn't mention what non-essential programs you deleted. Maybe you could tell us what they were? And you didn't say what version of Windows are you using. But regardless, since you fixed the problem, perhaps I can give you one piece of advice .. Don't delete entries in the msconfig unless you're positively sure they are truly non-essential; you can simply disable them, which will have the exact same effect AND you're covered in case something goes wrong. You'll easily log into Safe Mode, enable the disabled item, and get everything back to normal.

A) follow K's advice B)turn on system restore so you can just restore to a previous point if you screw things up again C)use linux but yea, just don't screw with anything if you dont know what it is, and make sure to make small numbers of changes at a time. Then at least you'll know what causes the problem if it happens again. But yea, telling us what you turned off could help someone pinpoint the problem

Well, I tend to use MSCONFIG to turn off non essential programs at windows start, but I normally leave out system files since selectively turning on and off these files tends to be a bit of a headache. However, turning off applications that auto-start on boot (and especially those that do not allow you to select optionsthat disallow auto-run at boot) does speed up boot times by quite a bit by clearing out stuff youonly use once in a while, and also programs that tend to run in the background and use up CPU and memory. Frees up a lot of RAM too, so all in all it's a pretty good thing - as long as you don't fiddle around with the system centric auto-run applications that get used really often.

It was happened to me before too, I changed what I did to the old ones.Even Internet Explorer didn't work.When I looked at msconfig, Isaw that windows didn't open except itself.So you better undo the changes and the other answers were good too.

I did try to re-enable them, but it didn't make any difference. BUT... these were the entries I disabled: Ypager (Yahoo Messenger), NeroCheck, Acrotray, Qttask (Quicktime), and Ypops. As far as I know they don't have any bearing on the system startup status, other than using memory. I don't see how they could be related to the windows services.

Alright, now I really don't know what's going on. You're right, the applications you mentioned do not have any bearing on the startup status or any other status, really. Although, I don't know much about NeroCheck since I don't use Nero. But I remember I tried to disable its autostart on a friend's computer, and as far as I could, this wasn't possible from within the application itself. I didn't get to the point of disabling it from msconfig, though, so I don't know if there'd be any consequences to the system. Well, sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I'm glad you got your system back anyway. :-)

So if you screw up you can easily go back to it.

Computer Ups & Voltage Regulator Problems
I can't get it to work (3) I have a 2.8 Dual core machine with a 17 inch monitor, 2 hard drives, a dvd burner, and a 350w power
supply. I have an 800w rated UPS, which according to the paper is supposed to give me around 8
minutes of power during a blackout. This is more of an issue than for most people, as here we have
an average of 8 power cuts a day during the 8 or 9 months of summer weather. The problem is that my
UPS doesn't really help any, because in a power cut it will go off as well for a second, and
then it comes back to life, but in that second my computer has gone off, and even tho....
Problems With Nero
(11) I have a problem when trying to burn audio cd's with Nero. When I reach the place where it asks
me to "add" what I want to burn, it doubles the size of what I am burning. In other words if what I
am burning is 55 minutes, when I add it to Nero it automatically becomes 110 If it was 45 minutes it
automatically becomes 90 minutes. Of course then the file is too large to burn as it exceeds the
capacity of the disk. Has anyone had this problem before???....
Screensaver Problems
It wont start (12) Hi I just re installed windows on my computer (I know i can hear people saying "Why Windows", but i
need it to run certain programs) and i have encountered a problem with my screensaver. I have it
set to load the "My Pictures" screensaver after 3 minutes. But after 3 minutes the screen saver wont
appear!! I have also set my monitor to turn off (standby) after 5 minutes. The only thing that i
find strange is that when i have locked the computer (e.g switch user) and it is sitting on the
login screen, the monitor will go into standby after 5 minutes, but before that no sc....

Web Browser And Taskbar Problems (web Browser Disappears)

Problems When I Download
(9) noramlly computer is mine but there are 3 users, like on every computer here. When you start up yiu
need to give the password of the user. Now when i am downloading and i'm gonna sleep my pc
always jump over to the userpanel --> my downloads stops Problem : most of the times you can't
resume theme. My limit is 10 G in the month. I always download 1 Gig when the filezise is 1.2 Gig,
--> i always lose 1 Gig for nothing....
Windows Xp Home: Bsod Problems
(6) i have got a new pc but now it give blue screens (of death) with titles as bad_pool_hacker etc., and
when i restart and send the rapport it says that there is a bad installaton of hardware but when i
look after it i don't see any problems with hardware. pc -intel pentium 4 -windows XP home
(later i have overwrite it to pro, without succes) -graphic card: on board....
Pc Problems
(4) I have had to sign up for dial up again due to my new place of residence not having broadband as
yet. I installed a brand new modem purchased from PC World in the uk (yeah i know bad place to buy
stuff from). Anyway the problem I have at the moment is that my machine keeps shutting down when I
am online. Sometimes it happens often maybe after being on for about 3-5 mins and other times it
takes a while. Could this be a heat issue? I took out my sound card just now as was not sure if it
was too much power being drawn from the mb and that seemed to help for a while. ....
Windows: Cant Return From Energy-Saving Mode
(8) The other day my computer went into it's little energy save setting where the screen goes black.
When I touched the mouse to get the screen back on(like always) nothing happened. I heard the
computer running but no screen. So I rebooted the computer. When it came back online, desktop icons
were gone as well as the files that went with them. /mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle"

ideas what went wrong? Any ideas on how I avoid this from happening again?....
Firelite Problems
(1) I just bought a new FireLite UBS Portable Hard Drive and I did everything that the directions told
me to do: plug the USB cord in the computer and the FireLite PHD, flip the switch to USB (so that it
will take power from the computer). I am using a Mac PowerBook G4 with OS X 10.3.8 I don't know
if the hard drive is defective or what. I don't have this problem with other hard drives that
take power from the USB port I don't know if I should but the power adaptor or not. If anyone
can help me I would appreciate it.....
Problems With My Dvd Burner
(7) I bought a 16x internal DVD +/- RW/ +/-R Dual Layer I/O Magic drive a few months ago. I am having
some troubles getting the drive to read and burn at anything above 4x. I currently have Windows XP
Home Edition installed on my PC. If anyone has any ideas as to why my drive doesnt seem to want to
work at top speed please let me know. Thanks alot....
