Isn't a Service pack for Windows OS just a collection of updates you occasionally have? For example when you install XP with SP1, you get lots of updates coming for some time, for that reason service packs are being released that you wouldn't need to do that every time you reinstall Windows, you later just install Windows, install the service pack and whola, you're updated to the latest version of updates, even though still with time you get new updates through Windows update system,...

What Is The Use Of Service Packs For Windows?

Vagodeoz
Hi there. Who of you has service packs and what are they good for?
Does it worth the huuuuuge download (keep in mind I have a 56k connection)?
I said I wasn't going to update it but I got a video editing program and it asks me to have Service Pack 1 installed and that made me reconsider my choice...
Thanks.

They release 1 service pack every year.

The last one was Service Pack 2, and Service Package 1 was of course released 2 years ago.

I would personally get it, but it is not compulary, and if you patch up your computer properly you don't really need it.

If you have a problem with the download you can get them directly from Microsoft for free, including the delivery and packaging costs.

I have Service Pack 2 and I think it is mainly for it's Firewall.
I don't know the rate of downloading because I installed from a Compact Disc and I am lazy to look for the details.

If you download it from the generic Windows Update it will only download and isntall the files you need. If you get the offline version then it will be over 250MB

the service pack offers the firewall, (veri important if dont have one already) plus offers newer directx, can get those in windows update anyway

I use Service PAck 2. Mainly it's all about security. And the firewall is perfect. Easy to manage exeptions and forward ports. I recomend you to use SP2.

If you can't download service pack, order a CD. The link is here

Service pack 2 is just another one of those "extra" software which like musichere said, is not compulsory as long as you patch up your computer and check for updates on virus definitions. The firewall that comes with Service pack i believe is totally unecessary because now i have 2 programs asking my permission to allow a certain knick-knack program i have if it can access the internet. Trust me, you only need one anti-virus software which asks your permission before allowing a program to access the internet or accessing your computer from the internet.
It might be a little problematic but seeing it will be the best way to block potential viruses with a human brain, why not?

People think that sp2 it's just a firewal... a minor security patches....

That's logical, because that's all we see to it... but there are many thing that are corrected with this update that we can't see..

So, go to the source:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

and, to be more specific, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/preinstall.mspx

thay have things like

• Top 10 Reasons to Install
• Feature List
• Quick Overview
• Technologies Overview
• What's New for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express
• What's New on Windows Update

Also, I don't know how the SP work, never really cared, but you get updates for different software you're using on Windows, for example Visual Studio, Office and so on.. as I remember there's a SP1 for Visual Studio 2005, with which you get all the updates in one file and you don't need to worry about security risks or bugs, even though you need biggrin.gif but maybe it's more stable.. tongue.gif

The service pack 2 have more secure patch with firewall security so i think if have possibility to use it to make the system secure from Microsoft windows xp. or can make secure from otherhand also but it is not reliable so i also using SP2. as most says that every SP should be use time to time otherwise you suffered ya this is correct if you are using older version than you are data is not secure so how to protect data from third party tool why we are not using SP this if free use for test. it is down loadable from the site. approx. size 250 mb. it not only protect from mal function but it also protect from unauthorized use of your PC.

Service Pack 2 with Advanced Security Technologies features a firewall and a popup blocker. It installs the latest windows updates so that Windows XP runs better with less problems. I personally dont use the firewall service, and actually dont use a firewall at all.

The pop blocker does a good job, and its built right into the internet options settings in internet explorer. If it blocks a popup, a yellow bar will appear under the address bar. So just in case it blocks a popup that u want to run, you can click on that yellow bar and select for it to temporarily run. Or if a pop isnt blocked, you can go into the internet settings under tools, and have it blocked so the same popup doesnt run again.

You can download Service Pack 2 or if anyone wants the CD (free) from Microsoft follow this link:
