Is A Router Really Necessary?

Laurence
Yeah, just like everybody have said, unless you are using it to connect the router to connect it to another computer, or if you are going to use voip, it would just be useless just to hook it up to one computer. Or if you have things that use wi-fi, and you had a wi-fi router it would be useful, but I don't think it would be in your case.

Having a router is definitely a good precaution to take. NAT helps to protect your computer. Having a router also allows you infrastructure to easily grow, plus you get lots of useful features. Remote access, port forwarding, mac filtering, etc....

I use router to automate a few of the task, like firewall, internet sharing and being able to host diff server on diff PC on the same IP (with diff port of cause). Also, to use DDNS automatically. With a router, I can also hold on to the same IP longer than before, because PC require more frequent reboot. The longest I did was almost a month. tongue.gif

Well, with the newly introduce bittorrent router, which you can download torrent with, it can also help to save power, cause you don't need to keep you PC on all the time. This bittorrent router comes with built in torrent software, an USB port to plug in an external hard drive to keep your downloads, and an web interface to manage the download list, cool ye

Bittorrent router? Never heard. However, routers are just smart switches, for me, my router mainly manages my DHCP/DNS settings and provide wireless throughout my house.

There're other brand, like Planex or even those cheaper one from china. Price around RM3++ or USD1++

The ASUS one can even host HTTP and FTP. cool.gif
