| | Okay - now that I've started thinking about "laptop" and "notebook," I have a question for anyone who might be able to explain.
Is there a difference, or is it just a matter of two terms describing the same thing? If there's a difference, what is it?
Now that I'm wondering about it, it's going to bug me for the rest of the day! *grins* |

I guess it depends. Sometimes you might use the two terms interchangeably. They usually refer to a portable computer as in the normal use of the word "laptop" or sometimes they call it notebook (I know, I know it's confusing  ). The reason I say it depends is because I recall that the word notebook are frequently used for Macs. The macintosh laptops (there it goes again) are more often referred to as notebooks. If you ask me, I say laptop is for regular Intel/Windows PCs and notebook are referring to the Macs.

As I know of it lately, "notebooks" are the more correct ways of calling the things, and "laptops" are slangs used as "notebooks" have a common confusion with the one you write on.

Those words have the exact same meaning, only "notebook computers” is formal name for laptops.

Notebooks used to be portable computers that did not have internet hardware onboard, like modems or network ports. This was used in the old days. Laptops do have them so the are called lap (as in your lap) TOP. Which derives from desk top. But since most of the portable computers have internet access stuff on board, laptop is the most common name now. ps. don't ask me for proof or something, I read it somewhere a long time ago and I can't be bothered to find a source

I do think that Laptops/Notebooks are one and the same thing... some brands like to call them one way or the other, but basically they meen portable computers. I dont really understand all the fuss about this question anyway...

This thing bothers me also. But as far as I know both are same thing. Sometime ago word laptop was used very much but now a days I am seeing that Notebook word is more in fashion now a days. I will definately like if somebody clarify the difference between Notebook and Laptop.

Opinion/Suggestion : I also confused with the terms really.. but laptop is small enough and keep it in lap while working. notebook is much thinner than laptop. both are portable. but ultimately meant the same. -kavi

1)macs company called the portable pcs as notebooks earlier, other companys calls as laptops. 2)notebooks don't have internet card, graphics card and it is with less battery backup. 3)LAPTOPs are similar to pcs now a days what ever we do in desktop can be done even in laptop. -reply by vijaykumar

there's no hardware difference at all... here in south america we use notebook, but i think laptop is more apropriate, because it "sits on your lap"  also, it's better to understand... i mean, in a conversation like: i just got a 1 thousand dollars notebook!

Laptops and notebooks are largely the same thing. It is just that two names have been used in the past to describe the same thing. However, there are new notebooks / laptops marketed as 'netbooks', which are small form factor notebooks / laptops that are marketed mainly for accessing the internet on the go without lugging around a large notebook / laptop.

Well, the smaller ones are called subnotebooks or netbooks ... and smaller desktops (in power, but that's really subjective) is now called net-tops. xboxrulz

I also don't see any difference between a notebook or a laptop, but does a desktop computer have a different name? Sometimes I also thought that notebooks refer to smaller laptops, because my foreign isn't English, moreover, for smaller computers in my language we have several words.

I lean towards the side of Mac's call them notebooks and others call them laptops. Really they are the same thing but I always kind of thought laptops are bigger and notebooks are smaller and they are made for a college student that uses it mainly for school work and they carry it around with there books hence the name notebook.

Laptop Auto Starts After Turning It Off

Laptop Wont Power With Under Battery Power
(2) hello all.....haven a odd issue with a laptop.......the laptop will not power up unless the ac
adapter is plugged in....the battery is new and once the laptop is runnin xp shows thats the battery
is charged...currently 92%. Now i can unplug the ac adapter and the system will run under battery
power for some time(1 hour +) but if i power the laptop down and try to power it back up it will
power up for 3 or 4 secs then go dead.then i have to use the ac adapter once again. I"m thinkin

(19) Hi All, I have a Acer Aspire 3003WLC for about a year now. Not a bad, simple laptop, but i have been
having power problems recently. I have had to have the laptop repaired once already because the
sound had stopped working and since I have got it back there has been problems with the power. When

(6) Hey all! I have a Samsung NV5000 laptop, and it's been in operation for around 7 years
(you've read it correctly, if u dun believe ur eyes, read it again.) However, something strange
happens to my LCD screen whenever the screen sleeps and then wakes up. Suddenly it just reddens up
:s, then a few seconds later, it turns back to normal colours. However, when compared to other

Help, My Laptop Charger Is Not Working Properly
(24) I have a HP Pavilion laptop. I bought it about 2-3 years ago. I try to plug in the charger end to
my laptop and it does not start charging. I can take the back off of it, plug the charger in, and

Problem with Dell 600m (20) One of my friends has a Dell 600m which he bought around the same time as me. We pretty much have
the exact same specs, but my processor and video memory is a little better. He has been having

Laptop Battery Bay Damaged?
(15) I had my laptop for over a year and suddenly one day it won't hold the charge in the battery
anymore. So I thought it was a bad battery...sent it in to be repaired and the techs said it's
not the battery. Tested ok. They said it was the charging port. Warranty was over already so I dealt
with the issue...about 3 years now. I want to know how to repair this. Do I have to change the whole
motherboard to replace that battery compartment area? Or is there an easier way to do this? The
