Was it worth it? It damned well should, since I think they already broke the law for it!

Do you know how much Norton AV 2006 costs? Measly 40$. And Spysweeper? 30$. So if you went to Symantec and bought NAV, then to Webroot and bought Spysweeper, you'd pay only $70. Remeber, if you do that, you'll have valid, legal licenses for both pieces of software, not to mention the updates and customer support. All you have now is a (most likely) stolen copy of the two programs, which even that you would lose if you had to format your system for any reason.

But that's not all. Best Buy is a notorious suck-a$$ company. There's a whole site dedicated especially for it, called Best Buy Sucks!

Here's one of the zillion e-mails former BestBuy customers sent to this site...

QUOTE
Best Buy - Geek Squad had my computer for over 6 weeks! I brought my computer to Best Buy because it was running a little slower than usual. For over 6 weeks Best Buy representatives were telling me different stories regarding the problem with my computer including, virus, just needing to be defragmented, IEEE Controller, etc. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT WAS THE MOTHER BOARD!!! They cant fix it! BEST BUY SCREWED UP MY COMPUTER BEYOND THEIR REPAIR!!!

Called to speak with local managers several times. Messages were left - no return calls. I then called the corporate reps. The unprofessional attitudes received from, finally, both local and corporate reps was unbelievable. They didn't exhibit one ounce of professionalism. Best Buy provided the most deplorable customer service I have ever received from any company in my life. Stated simply, they were rude and made it clear that they could give a rats ass if they ever received my business again. Best Buy reps ignored, mislead, and withheld information from me regarding the status of my computer repair job.

They finally returned my computer to me and guess what!!! THE COMPUTERS SECONDARY HARD DRIVE IS GONE!!!

Lovely, wouldn't you agree?

I have no advice for you about the 100 bucks you payed, but I think I advised you enough NOT to go to Best Buy ever again.

Good luck next time, and sorry about your money, man!

If they installed it without asking your permision, then you can refuse to pay the bill, and remove the software.

They cannot install anything which you have to pay for withoput the owners permission!

I'd just tell 'em to shove the bill, unless you have already paid it.

Next time you have a problem, take your hard drive somewhere else.

Wow thanks for the warning there is no way i am going to pay the bill now. In fact i think i am going to write a letter to the head of the department or the what ever supervisor they have to make sure this kind of thing doesn't keep happening.

Sounds like you got ripped off, I'm sorry to hear that. Next time you have computer problems, try searching around, there might be a (free) simple fix or program that will do the trick.

Definitely. I would suggest you take some time out and search around on the internet. You can save yourself a whole lot of money. Some of the free software you get from the net (which don't contain spyware) are just as good as the commercial ones.

Personally I never had problems with BestBuy before. I know BestBuy charge a lot for their "tech support", so maybe extra $30 was labor (whatever they did LOL).

Tamer78Aly, so you're saying they install illegal software on the end-users computer? I don't think they can do this especially if they are a big company like BestBuy...but I guess anything can happen these days. I know you will dispute this bill, but check out the Norton Antivirus and SpySweepers licence/serial and call up Symantec and Webroot to check if they are valid. If not, you know what to do from there...report it.

Like abhiram said, there are many free antivirus alternatives out there. Personally I use Grisoft AVG and love it. Been using it for years now and have no complaints. For antispyware, I also use free programs like Ad-aware (has a Pro version) and Spybot. I have a list of free programs here which you may be interested in.

Hey Weapon. I never said they actually DID install illegal software. I only said I can't see how they could give the guy BOTH NAV and Spysweeper without a license (I assumed since he didn't mention one) under any other light. Don't get me in trouble, man! biggrin.gif

I think they should have given you the Anti-Virus and Spyware CD if they did it for you. Because if you have another computer problem and those programs get deleted you will need the discs to reinstall them.

I had to same problem a few years ago and they installed the Anti-Virus for me after doing a system restore. It costed me around $120. My cousin who is computer illiterate refused to download an anti virus and every week had crashes. He took the computer to Best Buy at an average of 4 times a month only for them to do a system restore and give it back to him. He was only lucky that his computer was under the warantee or he would be owing Best Buy thousands of the dollars. He finally got them to install an anti-virus after all those problems.

Every computer must have an Anti-Virus, if you don't then you are in trouble. Although Best Buy charges crazy prices for a simple thing like installing an Anti-Virus it's still better getting an Anti-Virus then not having one at all. I have Norton Anti-Virus, Firewall, Spysweeper and sometimes bad things still manage to sneak into my computer.

To prevent a virus always remember to scan files that look suspicious, especially if you're using a peer to peer program such as Kazaa. Also stay away from the porn websites, they are virus heaven smile.gif

yes, there are alternatives...Spybot or Adaware can be downloaded from their respective sites and cost approx $30 a year each. Note: a lot of spyware programs say they are free...well, you can run the scan for free, but if you find spyware that should be removed, they say you have to buy the product to be able to remove the spyware. So, they're not really free! sad.gif

It wasn't worth it. I could get them both free of charge, illegal offcourse but who cares.

Let's see ... who would care if Yacoob stole software? The developers, maybe? I bet they would care a lot, seeing as they put countless hours into their programs. And Yacoob: if you created something and people stole it from you, I'm willing to bet that you would scream like a little baby about those evil, nasty thieves.

It's worth it. You really need an antivirus and an antispy. If you ask a reseller, he will sell you what he thinks is the best for you, with a honest benefit.
Of course, you can try to buy for less money, if you find.
And of course, all of us are honest, nobody does illegal things.
There are a lot of really free, and (almost) correctly working softwares. In case of doubt, confirm with McAfee freescan.

    Best Antivirus (25)
Have you people checked out the NOD32 Antivirus by ESET. It is the best antivirus with a bundle of

protection for the viruses. It prevents the virus infected files in the temporary internet files
folder and deletes them there. It provides support for Email checking etc also. Moreover, it
automatically gets updated. We have been using NOD in our office for over a year and we never got

  13. Norton AV 2005 Better Than 2006 ?
    (14)
I recently upgraded my Norton from 2005 to 2006, didnt have much of a trouble there, but after the
first reboot, my PC went hell slow. I know there had been problems of NAV acting a little weird at
startup and slowing down startup time, but 2005 used to start up faster and better than the previous
version. 2006 takes atleast a minute or so to start up now. I am not the tweaking guy so i settle
with the defaults of NAV and it works fine for me. But is there a new option in 2006 that needs to
be enabled/disabled. Is anyone else going through a slow startup with 2006 ? Re....
