Hello, I got an evaluation copy of Windows Server 2003 and I'm already having problems. I'm just trying to expand my knowledge using my home network. Ok, I have a network domain (moonburst1.gotdns.org) and I *think* I setup my server correctly. However, when I try to connect my laptop to the domain, I get the following: QUOTE The error was: "DNS name does not exist." (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.moonburst1.gotdns.org
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
moonburst1.gotdns.org gotdns.org org . (the root zone)
For information about correcting this problem, click Help. After I read that, here is what I pretty much looked like: I have a DNS server running so I'm not sure of what the problem is... anyone here a Windows network administrator or know a little bit more than I do about what I'm doing?? I'm assuming you can do this on a home network because in some of the Wizards, it even mentions "small networks" and "small home networks" Thanks for any help! I'd like to get this working! [N]F EDIT: Oh, and if a mod thinks this should go in OS > Windows, please feel free to put it there. I put it here because it mainly deals with networking.

OK, I kind of got it working now! I started over fresh and removed Active Directory. This time I changed the domain to XERGE.DYNAMIC10.COM and it liked it better... perhaps it would have worked with moonburst1.gotdns.org... I think it could have been the that I was putting in "moonburst1.gotdns.org" (no quotes) and perhaps just the "moonburst1" part would have worked fine... Now I need to figure out a hack to get Win XP home computers to join... stupid MS and their $100 feature difference between OSes... [N]F

Tracing Broadcast Storms
A poorly managed or configured layer 2 switch may affect network laten (3) In some cases, a single layer 2 switching device configured improperly can cause serious
connectivity problems, especially on a large network. Problems of this nature behave similar to
Denial of Service (DoS) attacks but are slightly easier to track. Most intranets serve a central
location where other internal networks are connected. Whether it is a remote off-site location or
only accessible by taking an underground railway, it's usually the best place to start
disconnecting backbones to find out which physical subnet is causing the problem. Broadcast storms

Extending A Wireless Network
Wireless Internet (2) Usually, to integrate WiFi capabilities into an existing LAN involves interfacing a wireless router
with an existing LAN and configuring it as an access point. If it is meant for free public use, then
it may not be necessary to encrypt the transmission, otherwise it is advisable to encrypt it with at
leas a 64-bit WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) key. Depending on the gain in db of the attached
antenna, the radius of wireless coverage can vary from 250meters to close to 450meters. Now comes
the stage where we need to extend the coverage of the wireless transmission, t....

Having Network Card Issues On A Dual Boot Laptop
(4) I have just installed a dual boot setup with Windows XP Professional SP2 and Ubuntu 7.04 on a DELL
Inspiron 1501. While I did the installation no cable was plugged into the NIC. After plugging a
network cable into the NIC I'm having the problem that Ubuntu recognizes and can work with the
NIC without any problems, but in Windows XP I can't get the LAN connection to show up in Network
Connections. So I have therefore narrowed down the problem as not being on the hardware side. I
tried running the Add Hardware wizard with the installation CD inside and instructed ....
How To Keep The Internet Out From A Network ?
Using Dlink Giga lan switch, DSL ... see picture (9) So..in the picture below you can see the schematic I made. The internet enters in the first PC thru
the DSL box , and I wanna connect the internet PC with the other PC's with a giga lan speed. For
that I think I will need a second Lan card because the internet PC only has one lan port. Next I use
the Dlink 8 ports Switch. But I don't want the internet go from the internet PC thru the Dlink
and to the other PC's. Because I don't wanna put firewall and stuff on the other PC's.
But maybe with this setup, the internet will just naturally stop at the firs....

Backup DNS For Domain
(4) Hey, I'm not sure the technical term, but you know how domains have primary and secondary name
servers? Well, I know that when you go to a domain, it queries NS1.ASTAHOST.COM (for example if you
were hosted here) and if NS1 is down, it goes to NS2. Well, what I have a web server running on my
network and what I'd like to do is have it setup with a "Site Temporarily Down" message and then
if the server goes down for example.com, NS1 & NS2 also go down, have it redirect to a third DNS
server to redirect it to the server on my network with the "Site Down" message.....

Why Do Black Hackers Target The Average User?

are regular people victtimized? Kyro stated earlier that they do it for money, but thats not always
the case. Their are people who do it for the hell of it, or because they believe they will ruin
microsofts reputation. Don't they realixe that the average person won't just stop using
windows and switch to linux? What are your views? Can we one day stop them, or should we keep on
running from those nasty little virus's and spyware?....
What Replaces .netrc When Using Windows Xp ?

Unable To Connect My Comp. To A Wireless Network
(5) This happened to me many times before and i eventually had to call my uncle over to help me fix it
up. Miraculously, it always works everytime he comes. So the last time he came, i watched carefully
and made sure i remembered everything he did. It was not exactly complicated, and he set up the
network manually for each computer. All he did was set up a wireless network using the wizard and
then set up a home or small office network using another wizard. I did it again with my new desktop
but it didn't work. Even though i set permissions for the firewall to allow it a....

How To Connect Computers In A Wi-fi Network
Peer-to-peer connection? (10) My parents have been persuading me over and over again to do something about our wireless internet
connection. No, its not that the router has any problems connecting the computers to the internet.
My problem is that i want to connect my computers together to enable the sharing of files,
programs, and most importantly, my printer. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to use the already set
up wireless connection to link all the computers together. I've done networking with cables yeah
but never with wireless. I've tried the wizards Windows XP provides to create ne....

Network Storage W/o Router
SATA HD Enclosure for my Dorm (7) My roommate and I have been looking for a way to share a network drive. I recently bought a 250GB
SATA HD for my computer because I desparately needed more space. When I go to college in August, my
rommie and I want to share that space. Is there any enclosure that will support a SATA HD and still
allow two computers to access it simultaneously. I know that this doesn't seem like a network
issue but there is the possibility that we would use an Ethernet enclosure and try to attempt some
type of NAS set up. We do not have a router and we really just want an ad hoc....
Sharing "domain" & "workgroup"
Network 2 dissimilar Computers? (7) Hello All, I have what may be a strange question... hopefully the answer/fix isn't as strange.
*grin* I have a home network. Works fine. Main computer hardwired, daugher's computer via

sucessfully use my network wireless card and gain access to the internet at home. This Laptop from

School Network
What do you think? (14) Our high school just got the new version of Novell ZenWorks, and it has some awesome features.
I'm a computer tech at the school, so I get to use many of these features. I think one of the
more scary features is the remote control. The admin can control any computer on the network. He can
turn them on, log them in, and even lock the local mouse and keyboard. It's really fun to spy
on people in the library and computer labs, and lock people's workstation controls, although I
have had this happen to me. Many people in my school believe that it is an invasion o....
Dyndns (get A Domain Name For Your Home Computer)
wuth this free service (7) Most Home internet users have dynamic IP address' Meaning they may change every time you reboot
your computer or router. For most internet use, you dont need to worry about your IP, but if like
me you need to ssh into your home network from work or university... OR run quake servers somtimes
to play againsed your friends... then you probably know how annoying dynamic IP's really are.
Maybe you want to run a public webserver from home ? getting a non computer savvy fiend to remember
