...but im stickin with windows and linux till someone destroys microsoft
Ignorance is the only reason I can think of anyone actually could actually like microsoft. "Destroy Microsoft" fill me with such a nice warm feeling. To kc8yff I say stand up for your principles and get a Mac. Don't cave like most people.
Of course, that reccommendation is faint praise, because, in fact, you are sacrificing a bit when you opt out of the Microsoft empire.
Joking aside, I could never reccommend switching from an OS you have become comfortable with, unless you want to broaden yourself. It is a hateful and miserable experience, much like moving to another country. You will survive and come out of it stronger, and one day you learn not to regret your decision. But if you are of sensitive temperment or prone to suicide don't do it. Of course if you were considering switching to from Mac to Windows the prospective misery would be 100 times worse. I would'nt reccomend that switch unless you had absolutely no choice at all, or if you wanted something like a future in computing industry.
By the way, as much as the thought of Microsoft's downfall brings joy to my heart, I do not think this will happen. I believe that an investment in Microsoft is one of the best you can make. I think that Microsoft has made a serious amount of investment in future development and I think that counts for a lot. I do not mean to imply however that the other major OS's do not have a future. Unix looks solid and Linux is on the rise, and if the posts here are any indication then Mac is looking good as well.
I really like the look of the new (old) Mac Mini, even though it does come with an older version of Mac OS X.
As for the new OS X - Tiger - it looks awesome. The fast user switching animation (with the cube) looks brilliant, and the whole dashboard thing with the widgets seems to be the most beautiful, and most useful thing on the planet.
Coupled with the fact that you can download Firefox and use it on Mac, I love it!!!
You bring up some interesting pionts. I just have a few questions.

In many ways the Mac represents a lot of what I hate about Windows (which after all is a Mac ripoff). I liked the simplicity of DOS, though I reconized that the limitations were too great. I did not like the point and click junk and largely felt that the Mac was great for dummies but then only a dummy would use one. The problem with the mac (and its ripoff, Windows) is that like any enormous program that tries to do your thinking for you,
I don't see what your problem is. Isn't that the purpose of a computer? To do work for the user?
QUOTE
...ultimately makes you feel like you are caught in a giant beaurocracy that does the weirdest things for unknowns reasons. Now, of course, I have had to accept Windows (shoved down my throat), and I have very slowly begun to learn how some of it works.
In summation I would say that the Microsoft OS is a happy (if perhaps mediocre) medium between the excessively opaque and controlling system represented by the Macintosh and the do it yourself system represented by Linux. It seems to be a compromise that the largest community of people have been able to settle on, and it is that community (by no virtue of Microsoft) that makes the PC unrivaled. However, my gratitude goes to the struggling competitors who help to keep Microsoft working hard for their unearned monopoly.
Could you give some examples of how Mac OS X do too much?
Also, you say that Windows does so well because it pleases the biggest group of people. Back in the 90's Apple was having some trouble and was putting out some pretty bad stuff. Meanwhile Microsoft was doing well and gained a big market share. At that point the contest was over. Microsoft won the OS wars on good bussiness, not got tech. More people were familiar with Windows, so those that didn't want to explore their options choose Windows. And more programs were made for Windows (because more people had it.) this led to more people using Windows. Which caused more programs. More Widows users. And so on. It's always been about business which is why Linux has been able to compete with Windows so much better. Linux is free (can't beat that price) and it is available to that large market (anyone with Windows, no new computer required to try it out.)
As far as quality goes, I think any OS is petter than Windows. I personally prefer Mac OS X.
ive merged the topics "Mac vs Windows", "Windows vs Mac" and "Mac/Windows which is the best" into the same topic. The titles were the same, as were the thread contents.
- A good word-processing program. - Good photo viewer and editor. - Video editor. - POP3 program. - Nice internet browser. - Chat client that can handle MSNM, YIM, and AIM.
Thanks.
There's no doubt that MacOS can do all of what you mentioned about. But, there another thing you should really consider. Maintaining and upgrading capabilities. I'm certain that its easier to get support for Macs from hwere you are, but what if something as simple a your video card should go? For PCs you can get it anywhere, and you can choose for a range of brands and prices to fit your current budget. For the iMac? Do you think it would be just as easy to get?
I like the Mac OS better, because it looks more savvy than windows. In windows everything crashes.
Plus, I hate Bill Gates.
True.. MacOS is quite nice. But it does give as much problems as Windows does. Infact, I use both OS's for work & play and the I find Windows easier to cope with. This is because Windows gives you some sort of hint when as to why it crashes. Mac? Well lets say that I gave up after 7 hours of trying to figure out what the problem was the last time it crashed. I ended up reloading.
I'm thinking, perhaps, your windows wasn't setup properly why your Windows crash.
I haven't have to reload my Windows machines for almost 2 years now. The last crash I had was because my modem got burnt (an you'll know that win modems with hang the PC because it uses the CPU to carry out its functions). A quick switch an I was back to normal.
This question is easy: get a Mac, it is more user-friendly, less clogged, more stable and less evil operating system and machine than Windows which is not as user-friendly, clogged w/ spyware and bloatware (WinXP is spyware) and all that crap.
Hands down...get a Macintosh. I'm quite familar with Mac OS X, and Windows, (as well as Linux and OpenBSD). Apple pays a LOT more attention to product quality than Microsoft does, and ever will, and takes much better care of their customers. The hardware platform of the Macintosh, combined with the UNIX base of it, makes a system that is much more stable than Windows could ever offer (anyone here that is telling you otherwise, has obviously not used a Macintosh computer enough to know this). At Apple Computer, what they do is not so much a business as it is a "spiritual experience" (in the mind of Steve Jobs). I use Mac OS X, as well as Debian Linux every day, several hours a day. For the programs you mentioned, Picking up a Mac mini and a copy of iLife Suite '05 would suit you quite well.
I agree with empty calorie. Also, I want to say that running Macs can also enable you to use UNIX software. You can compile and run Linux software too! Which you can't do that on Windows natively.
I am sure I ahve weighed in on this topic somewhere else but I will agian.
I use Mac OS X on Intel now on a daily basis (we have the developer's boxes).
A year ago when this thread was launched I would have said wait for the Mac Mini's with 512MB of ram, well those are here now. I am going to say: wait: the OS X on intel will be out by Feb. So long as your not going to be running Pro Apps (Final Cut Pro et. al.), wait for OS X on Intel.
All the iLife Applications work fine, some hiccups, but again, we have the developer's edition...it is supposed to have hiccups.
I really can't see spending the money now knowing there is going to be an entire shift away from PowerPC to Intel based chips.
People can complain about Apple's Premium Price, but you pay more for a BMW rather than a VW too.
Personally I like OS X better than Windows XP. Microsoft is about to release like a dozen versions of Vista in Q2 2006...that is going to be a damned nightmare, but I am looking foreward to the consulting revenue from businesses going, "Okay, now what the hell do I buy?".
There is only two classes of OS X: 10.x and 10.x Server. Unless you really need the server side tools, OS X 10.4 will do you justice.
I'm curious how fast people's systems start up. As a side effect, I'm stress-testing
Astahost's polling system. BTW, here's an interesting article called "Making Ubuntu boot in

QUOTE Symantec: Windows is Most Secure OS hackers.jpgIn a report that surprises even the PC
lovers around here (read: me), Symantec has listed Microsoft Windows as the most secure OS out
there. They claim that Windows had the fewest number of patches and the shortest patch development
time of any OS, including Mac, Red Hat Linux, Solaris, and HP-UX (any HP-UX fanboys in the house?).
So what in the hell is going on? We've been spoon-fed all this data that says Windows is about
as secure as a screen door while Macs are perfectly safe, yet OS X came in 3rd in the ....
Please im in Fire about that problem! im using Windows, and i didnt ever use Lunix/Unix platforms,
so here is choice windows os or Lunix! If u have ever used Both or one of the platforms please tell
me ur impressions abt it!!!....
How much difference will be between these two windows .May be little or very much .What I think
personally is there will be difference but it will be not that much as between windows 98 and xp
.What are ur views about it.....
I was born in a small town... and am being raised in it! I just wanna know what the differences are
and how each is to use. I use windows and its hard to imagine it any other way since so many
programs run on windows/linux/mac and nothing else. I don't know anything! tell me!....
Ok, here's some of my evaluation from a non-bias stance (although it is hard as I'm a
die-hard Linux user and try to truely live in a M$ free environment, excluding the XBOX/XBOX 360 and
its games) Pros: - seems like Microsoft knows my main weakness in a computer software... tonnes of
eye-candies, I simply can't stop staring at them. I hate stuff that are boring and blah. I like
crystal like stuff, all around... Maybe that's why I like KDE more.. w/e. - seems to be more
organised than Windows XP - Windows built-in Antivirus and Antispyware. - New feature....
Well, as we all know, the Windows Genuine Advantage was launched on July 25th, 2005, but is it
really to our advantage or theirs? Especially after reading this section of the article: QUOTE
Mississauga, ON. - July 25, 2005 - Microsoft today announced the transition of the Windows Genuine
Advantage (WGA) pilot to a version 1.0 launch with worldwide availability. WGA is part of
Microsoft's ongoing commitment to protect its customers from software counterfeiting and to help
support its partners through education, engineering and enforcement of policies and laws.....
I found an article on oneandoneis2.org and it describes how Microsoft's invention, Windows made

This is quite an old topic, but I am here to relate my experience. I wanted to start a new thread
cause is feel there are many out there like me with similar experiences. But first, a background -
I've been using windows for over 7 years now, right from 95 to xp pro here. (the only version is
skipped was 2000 and me) I have become the proverbial 'guru' in my area - if there was
anything related about computers, it had to be me. Then, I heard about linux. I wanted to try it
out, but was shy. But then, 1 month ago I got an opportunity to test it out when window....
I want to hear your opinions. Which do you think is the better OS, Microsoft Windows or Linux? And
why do you feel this way? Post here for your comments. As for me, I'm a windows fan, but
I've grown tired of the older versions of Windows. Then again, I haven't actually tried
Linux yet.....
I think they all have good and bad points. Mac: + Few number of viruses, great for graphic
designing, audio recording, video editing... - Compatibility: Many things (especially games) not
available for macs, even though that is slowly changing. Windows: + Good Compatibility, can do
everything: play games, working with graphics, audio, video... - TONS of viruses, some stability
issues. Linux + I haven't tried it, but I have heard it works awesome for servers. Few (or
none) virus. No Hardware compatibility issues. - Quite poor compatibility. Few gr....

Take your better decision. Windows is good to play and for the ones that pleases them to sacrifice
the power by the facility. On the other hand linux is for all those that pleases them to learn and
to obtain the greater power of its computer. And mac is an excellent one opcion for the ones that
need proprietary software and power graphic.....
Windows Vs Linux 1-Security is depend on many parameters in per network, and only operating system
can't to meet to cover the security. For example : a few years ago a company employed number
of peoples to search in the papers and rubbishes of Microsoft and find Codes of Microsoft, and
found important information . Then we can see that the security of a network is depend of many
factors that we may don't care about those. Windows and Linux have weaknesses in security, but
because of many users of Windows, naturally the weaknesses of Windows is discoverable....
