the 'www' is more or less just a subdomain...many websites don't even need you to add 'www' to work...

It's just important if you are in the army Actually, http: is needed, it defines the default port for that protocol to be used. Your browser settings however or registry settings state that if it's not there, then it will include it as the default, unless you've change this setting. It's only minimal speed difference. Things that affect the speed can be proven by just typing the name astahost in the browser, this means your computer has to include http:// to the address as well as a forward slash / to the end of it, it could then go through a list of common domain endings like .com .net .org etc if it can't locate that name as it is or it would default to the search engine. So when typing an address, use http://astahost.com/ for better performance, it could also be wise to use www incase they aren't class B. Cheers, MC

Astahost :The Web server is at Astahost. com :This is a commercial institution. Actually, you have more to an URL than you state here. You forgot the user identification section. protocol://user:pass@subdomain(s).domain.toplevel./path/to/file- protocol being one like http ftp irc ... - user being your username when requesting access to that specific resource. If none specified, most User Agents (browsers for example..) will log in with username Anonymous or blank - pass being the password you use to validate your user credentials. Defaults to a random email adress-like pass for most User Agents, like IEUser@ or just blank - subdomain being the subdomain of the pc where the resource is. Defaults to www for HTTP, or blank - domain being the name of your domain, which includes the toplevel (com, org, net, ...) - path/to/file being the relative path to the resource you're trying to access. Relative towards the home path set by the server you're accessing to find the resource. On UNIX systems, this is Case Sensitive! Mark that after the toplevel domain name there is a dot * this is the root domain. All domains most have it, yet, nowadays, this last dot is omited and implicitly presumed.

Internet Getting Slower And Slower

Lately, my computer's internet has been getting slower and slower. When I check the connections

30kb/s. Could it be a problem with the ISP?...
Setting Up Wireless Internet For Mac Os

Hi, I just got my iMac today and want to set it up to have wireless internet using my DSL Router. I
got a USB Wireless Adapter (for the Mac OS) and installed the drivers for it. Then I restarted and
plugged in the USB adapter. The manual said a flashing icon should be on the upper left, but I
didn't see this. So I went into the Preferences (I think) and found the 802.11b adapter there.
I clicked on it and on the left, chose Create... I left it at Access Point (hope that's
correct) and set it to 26 digits for the password. Currently I'm using 128 bit en...

Share Internet Using Router And Modem That Uses Usb?

Today I was trying to setup shared internet for someone and was having lots of problems with it.
They are using AOL DSL and had their ISP's modem. They have a Linksys router (forgot what
model...WRT something) and I tried almost everything I can think of to no avail. Here is the
problem. The modem connects to the computer using USB ONLY. It has an ethernet adapter in the back
of the modem but it will not work (needs the USB either way). After playing around more for over an
hour, I came to some "conclusion" that the other machines need the modem to be connected via ...

peak hours. MySpace is still slower than my server though. But today at school, I try it and the
thing loads like it was on an OC-93 fiber line at a data center! AND- if I try to FTP...

Extending A Wireless Network

Usually, to integrate WiFi capabilities into an existing LAN involves interfacing a wireless router
with an existing LAN and configuring it as an access point. If it is meant for free public use, then
it may not be necessary to encrypt the transmission, otherwise it is advisable to encrypt it with at
leas a 64-bit WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) key. Depending on the gain in db of the attached
antenna, the radius of wireless coverage can vary from 250meters to close to 450meters. Now comes
the stage where we need to extend the coverage of the wireless transmission, t...
