How To Install SMF - Installing Simple Machines Forum

Yes, web install feature only installs final releases on server. This is to avoid buggy beta or RC releases. Web install is perfect for those who don't know how to do things. Simply, upload the php file and run the URL. Answer few questions and voila, script will update itself.

I was expecting SMF 2.0 final release this October. But there are no signs of it getting released. Any idea when it'll release. Or it'll go in 2010 ?They last released blog update on this in may i think. After that only RC version is updated. I don't know when they'll update themselves.

Well RC2 was released to charter members a few days ago, so in less than a month we should see a release to the general public. Depending on the number of bugs (there's a whole new default theme) the release could be as early as January 2010, or much later if there are more bugs.

So new version of SMF will be released in november ? Great. I was tired of waiting, it more than 2-month or so those floating released are going on. 1.19 and 1.1.10 were pure security releases. Nothing from design side was there in those versions. Now that new version is going to appear soon, can't wait to get my hands on it.

By the way, is it possible to let people sign up on SMF forums using OpenID ? I mean openid is fastest way to sign up and sign-in to any login based system. Is this supported in SMF ? If so, i'll try and enable that feature.

In 2.0 it is a feature, so it is incorporated. For 1.1 it may be a MOD, but is not a feature.
1.1 will just have security updates, and 2.0 is feature locked, so if you want anything new when it comes to features, you'll have to wait until 3 or 2.1.

Cool. Good to hear that OpenID is part of 2.0 release. Can't wait to get my hands on new version. My theme development and MOD development is pending because of this. :/ . I just hope they release it as early as possible. Design of my site is turning off visitors, no new signup this month on my forum. :-(

You could always start both, and just upgrade when the version goes final. Might take a little time, but I may be able to help.

Do I need to change the prefix? (4)
Hi, I have a forum with over 1000 members now and want to use that to do my testing. I'm using
SMF 1.1 beta 3. Will it work if I download the full database backup from my other webhost (not
astahost) and import it directly into Astahost? I know that it will always append a prefix to the
database name. I just want to install a test version of SMF in Astahost and do all my modding
there. How can I change all the prefixes to the one I have in Astahost (assuming that it's
    required)? Thanks.....
