Hard Drive Trouble - Windows crashing

Darren0330
Im having a problem with this computer I built, Its an asus board with 2 seagate 80gigs, I install winXP and it runs fine untill I get a random blue screen error and my CPU rebots, then winXP doesnt load. It says no harddrives detected (press F1) then the instert boot disk screen. This has done this to me a dozen times by now. I used to run the harddrives in raid conf. but I recently switched them on the board, now each drive is seperate. I dont get why it's doing that...?!? it always crashes 10 to 30 hours after I install windows. Anyone have any advise on this matter...???

Have you installed XP on both drives?
Do both drives crash within 10 to 30 hours?
By both drives I mean have you tried both drives as Primary.
If both drives are doing the same thing then it is either your cable or the mother board itself.

I am leaning on the mother board but the cheapest way would be to swap the cable first, then try a new drive, then try a new mother board.

I had a similar problem with my SCSI card. There I was able to simply swap out the card for another one of the same kind and the crashing (which under Linux was just the system freezing up every few minutes as the driver restarted the drives) Before you get another mobo, see if you can find a PCI drive controller. After all, if your IDE is the only thing broken, you really shouldn't have to replace the whole mobo...

Hi Darren.
I agree with madcow.. probably your SCSI card is going bad.. If you don't already have a IDE connector on the mobo...go for a PCI slot IDE type hard drive controller.. lots cheaper than replacing the mobo.
Hope this helps

I had that same problem with my sony vaio. I tried everything to fix it and nothing would work. I had to buy a new hardrive so that is what i think you should do.

So my uncle asks me to format his computer and install windows and stuff. So I did like I do with my
PC every six months. No problems at all, everything was working. So I proceeded to install drivers,
which I had already on my flash drive, a 2GB PNY flash drive. But, for some reason, the usb drive
was not recognized by windows XP on my uncle's PC, and I tried again on another port. No luck. I
was thinking maybe all the usb ports were broken or something... but then I went to my desktop and
proceeded to connect my usb drive to burn the drivers on to a CD. And what&#....

  5. Laptop Woes
    Constantly crashing... why? (6)
This is more out of curiosity, since i've already sent my laptop in to the store for repair, but
they're not that adept at pinpointing the exact causes of problems sometimes, and so i'd
like to get other people's input on what it could be. Basically it's a laptop that i've
used heavily for around 3 years, the presario 2500 series, which I've found has a reputation for
overheating. --yes, i've definintely found that to be true. I upgraded the memory to 1 GB
(2x512) a couple years ago, and it seemed to be working ok all that time. Now: it ra....

after inserting cd and files started being copied it started popin error messages at me saying that

Hey guys I have another i would like to ask about XP. On my PC Im having this rather annoying
problem!! When I want to reboot my computer or log off it just shuts down. It will say "Logging off"
and then quickly switch to say "Shutting Down" and then it will turn itself off. I have been having
this problem for about a year now and I havent done anything about it yet. Do you have any
suggestions about what I should do or why it happens? Has anyone else had this problem? Thanx again

    Weird problem with speakers.... (7)
Ok, I've had this problem for about a year. I've tried every single configuration offered
by the BIOS, Windows, and even the hardware itself, but my speaker's refuse to be balanced!
Though Windows says they are, I know my speaker's are unbalanced. The right is louder than the
left. I have absolutely no clue what's wrong with it, so here's system specs:
