I am a fan of Google and Gmail, and I think that since Google is such a huge internet service that I figure they would just have to change with the times and would add webspace. And I could see that after a beta test of that, they would begin to increase the server size.... Why!? I think that would happen because that is how Google operates. Google Webspace - Google Web Space

kc8yff
I have heard rumors that Google might be offering webspace to customers. I haven't read any articles about this. I merely stumbled upon it while reading something. If this rumor is true, what do you think Google will offer if their webspace just happened to be free?

I personally think they will eventually expand into this industry. Google has made it's way into Froogle and Gmail. It's likely that they will end up giving out free webspace.

Yes, I know, they do offer blogs already!!

Google is affiliated with Blogger. Blogger is offering free blogs. I don't know what else there is to say about this... you can check out the site: http://www.blogger.com. A while back, Blogger users got Gmail invites. I don't know if they are still doing this.

If you have any specific questions, I'll try to answer them!!

yeah but it would be ad payed, just like everything else on google, but at least the google ads are discreet. the only advantage i can think is that the bandwidth and space allowances will be huge. but you styill get those long annyoing subdomains that geocities and anglefire give out.

Comment/Reply (w/o sign-up)

kc8yff
That would suck. Sub-domains suck. What if Google gave out domains with their free webspace? You know how many people would register? It would probably start out like Gmail did -- limited time to register then a few invites. I had something like six invites at first, and now I have 48. If you want a Gmail account, send me an instant message or e-mail me -- neil.kollipara [at] gmail [dot] com.

Oh google webspace would be great, php, mysql, and all that would be great from google but I would still be here. They really need some sort of community, we all know there nice but why no community.

Welll...technicaly you can already get google webspace for free but I'm not sure if you would be able to get it to host your website....The thing with gmail is...You can turn your e-mail account into a virtual webdrive... so like you'd have about a gig of free space where you could store your things wink.gif

Comment/Reply (w/o sign-up)

That's what I like about Gmail... but you can't host your site through Gmail. You can store crap in your inbox, but you can't host a site.

If Google starts a web community forum of some sort, I will be the first one to register.

In fact, Blogger is owned by Google. Google purchase Blogger which was owned by Pyra Labs, a company working on blogging software. It's was a smart desicion Google in view of how hot blogs and blogging are these days.

I am not all opposed with having ads on my website, heck, I even make my own. It is the content and or how it is handled in the layout. I was SOOO annoyed with geocities and always having to click away the sidebar... did the creators of geocities think that EVERYONE used the new default settings!!? And I think a lot of others offer great service and have ads that had better placement.

Ok, so that turned into some kind of repressed rant there! So to summarize, I think that google should not tease, and should bring space to the net. I am a huge supporter of astahost, but it still is nice to see what the competition brings to the table.

Arbitrary
Actually, I believe there is already a service that emcompasses Gmail's storage space to use to upload any type of file--Gmail Drive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMail_Drive

Basically, it allows people to upload files from their computer to Gmail as if Gmail were a drive on their computer. In fact, the gmail account's contents shows up as a network share. Obviously, there are still restrictions, as Gmail doesn't allow the upload of .zip or .exe files, so those cannot be uploaded with Gmail drive either.

There is, apparently, also a firefox extension that does similar things--Gspace: http://www.getgspace.com/

Granted, neither service is condoned by Google (it's probably against the user agreement--I haven't checked). It could end with your account getting banned or suspended, depending on whether or not Google finds out... If someone were to test it out, obviously they wouldn't be stupid enough to do it on their actual account. :-)

Hey google is not providing such a service yet. but they provide 4.5gb email storage for a single person so I guess it may be useful if they can allocate that space for personal web hosting. But unfortunately they havnt done...

I would like to have a Google web site, they would probably use targeted dvertising like they do with Gmail and Google searchs, but with ust small test links, thats not too bad. And as for using Gmail to store files, I know a lot of people who are doing that (some of them have 10 or more Gmail accounts) and when you fill up your 1 GB storage, Gmail sometimes upgrades your limit to 2 GB. So all those people milking Gmail for file storage are now getting even more!
