Does Google Have A Sinister Ploy For Future

saneax
Some of you like myself swear by google, since we cannot imagine living without google search. However some of the discussions on net has made me thinking over an important issue. Will Google control too much of our lives ?

here are the links which discusses an important point on google's future plans ...
Let me add, google has already hired top brains for its (secret project), headed by Robert Pike. It could be soon, the era of booting into a internet harddisk. Otherwise, why is google investing so much into bandwidth ?

There is enough material, above to make the next sci-fi movie, where google controls everything.

I would be glad to hear your inputs..

There have been rumors of a Google OS. From what I have heard, Google is only using this within their own company and it will not be released to the public. This is consistent with their business model and motto, where they want to "control the world's information". A Google OS would be overkill, but if they do release one, it would not be an effort to displace Windows. Their current Google desktop is the closest that I think they will come.

As for Google providing domains, this makes sense for their business model. They already offer advertising for sites, and if they offer domains, they can more effectively index, and thus advertise for, websites that they sell domains for. Google has promised that their offering Domains will not interfere with current web hosting companies. Google IS offering web hosting, but that is not a huge threat to other web hosting companies geared to their customers.

As for the "sinister plans", I do not think that Google is targeting ISPs. Instead, Google is only trying to provide the "best" content for their users. If the ISPs cannot offer enough bandwidth for their usage, then that is their problem, not Google's. The only way that I could think that Google is targeting ISPs is if Google were using extra, unnecessary, bandwidth so as to artificially run up bandwidth. Google's applications seem, to me, to be very band-width friendly (they shrink their images to make load times faster, transfer as little of the information to the end user as possible by doing most computing on their servers, etc). Google seems to be a very responsible company, and any "sinister plans" are just them providing more content to the end-user faster, thus the end-user is able to use more bandwidth.

As for Google controlling the internet, this just sounds like a conspiracy theory. If Google was, in fact, trying to "control the internet", Microsoft, Yahoo, and other huge internet players would DEFINITELY have something to say about it. There would be many lawsuits all over the media (when a big corporation like Microsoft takes on another big corporation like Google, this is HUGE news). Since there have not been these huge lawsuits, these companies don't see a thread of the magnitude of "controlling the internet". The reason that Google just doesn't buy out other companies is the whole issue of monopoly laws. Microsoft has run into this issue many times in its history. Google cannot just "buy the internet" by buying every company that has anything to do with it because that would be seen as Google being a monopoly (as it should be). Google does not want to be a monopoly. Instead, Google just "plugs into" the internet. Google develops software and services that enhance the internet experience for the user.

The reason for all of the bandwidth is that Google is trying to create a huge information bank. Google is trying to upload every book, ever, onto their services, they must support YouTube and Google Video, Gmail takes a bunch of bandwidth supplying gigs of space to their users, Picasa is growing and takes a bunch of bandwidth, etc. Google has a lot of services that require a lot of bandwidth.

So, in short, Google is expanding to support the services it offers, not because it is trying to dominate the internet. I love Google, but I would turn on them once I thought they became a monopoly (I'm just a Benedict Arnold like that).

Would that be the Goobuntu OS that seemed to once be the talk of the day? I thought at some point Google openly declared that they weren't intending to create a Google OS anytime soon, but rumors seemed to hype the thing up a lot. I also agree that a Google OS would be reaching into rather far waters. But if they did create an online version of an OS, I'd be glad to try it out. Not officially as a permanent OS though, obviously, since it would take too long to load and you'd need another OS just to run it in the first place (unless your browser can be run without an OS).

I find nothing wrong in Google selling domains--it just seems to fit along with the rest of Google's web packet. Google offers hosting, so why shouldn't it also sell domains? It just seems to go nicely with Adsense, webhosting, and the like. So they're just attempting to crawl into the webmaster's hole.

I don't really see how Google is going to "control" the Internet as so you say. The one that has the biggest likelihood of controlling the Internet as of now would probably be the ISP's. If they somehow blocked access to a certain site (aka censorship, ahem!), then there probably isn't a way to overturn that. And ISP's aren't easily defeated. With Google, its main uses are as a portal to the rest of the Internet. If you're saying that Google's "control" of the 'Net comes from it being a portal, then you can always switch to a different portal like Yahoo or MSN and quit Google. Your call.

And the biggest problem with the Google OS theory is that Google doesn't have one to begin with. People just want Google to directly go against Microsoft (frankly, because a lot of people really don't like Microsoft, and having their favorite search company go against it is like some hero fighting against the sinister Dark Lord, which everyone enjoys) by creating an OS. But Google's not doing that, and so most of that is just pure imagination/speculation. Not useful in the support of Google's "sinister ploy for the future", because there's no solid evidence that Google's attempting to take over the desktop industry.

And Google investing in bandwidth should be obvious--Google has tons of visitors everyday. How exactly does it expect to keep up with its services if it doesn't get a ton of bandwidth? It won't be able to, period.

Nah I doubt that they are too.

But how knows what there real intentions are, and who is really controlling what happens and why. Google is large is it not? Obviously not all decisions are made by a single person, that would be far too time consuming.

So some decisions are perhaps made independantly of others, so it may just *look like* they are.

But the only way you'll ever find out is to ask them yourself and hope that they are telling the truth lol.

An internet controlled by google? That's tottaly insane.

I'm sure that when google sells domains that's just wrong.

Microsoft will beat a Google OS in my opinion and well that would be to weird. All programs would have a freiken google toolbar. Kinda scary.
