Good SATA Hard Drives

kevlar557
I'm planning on investing some cash into getting a couple of extremely large hard drives (300gb and up), and I was wondering what companies have good hard drives. I need them to be extremely fast, because they are going to be dedicated to mostly video editing and compiling. They also need not to be really expensive. CAn anyone give me some ideas?

I have no recommendation of a specific drive, but here's one of my posts from another thread about SATA drives. You'll find helpful info from others in the thread, as well.

Maxtor, Seagate, and Western Digital all make good hard drives. They're mostly the same, so there's no reason to prefer one brand over the other, besides personal preference. If you want speed, I suggest getting a drive with a 16 MB cache. Maxtor makes a few of these. Apparently they're almost as fast as the 10,000 RPM Raptor drives.

Previous post with specs For those of you not wanting to read that long post, I'll summarize
it quickly. I bought a 250GB sataII hard drive, I didn't know these things could be incompatible
with motherboards, I asked the vendor to make sure it would work fine on my system. He assured me it
would work like a charm. Long story made shorter, I hooked up the drive and booted up, the drive
didn't show up at all. In Disk Management it did, but if I tried to format, it would freeze up

Been thinking of using these converters on my IDE hard drives so they are 'SATA

(floppy drive type) connector. Have anyone used these IDE to SATA adapters before? Are both power
cables required in order to make a drive operational? I will also be getting a SATA PCMCIA card for
