Free Security Software Links... - No reason to be vulnerable....

ViriiGuy
I spend much of my day removing spyware and Virii from computers,
so I thought I would share with you some links to free software.

You may think, I am a smart surfer so I don't need any protection. Well

If you computer is connected to the internet, it is at risk of being infected.
No matter who you are.

Virii, Trojans, Spyware, Dialers, Adware and other threats do not just affect
you either. When you get infected you help to spread the infection to others.
So please keep your pc clean, try out some of these products.. All are free,
and all will help......

I see that you know much about spywares. Can you please help me.

Recently one of my friend bought a new computer. When he went on net he saw an ad of something like "Win Fixture, anti spyware to keep your computer spyware free---Your computer might be affected with spyware.........." and that all stuff. He downloaded that and then it created a hell lot of trouble. Whenever he tried to open a site this opened up. So I asked him to download MICROSOFT ANTI-SPYWARE as this (win-fixture) was a spyware in my knowledge. He ran the scan and it did catch some of them and removed them. But still sometimes win-fixture opened up when he tried to restart or shut-down the computer. He ran scan again many times but still nothing changed. So i suggested Ad-Adware. Tried this too,but spyware wont go. Can you please suggest me what to do next ????

Thanks in advance

That is because MS Anti-Spy will not catch Everything.....

Tell him to go to http://www.srnmicro.com and download the trial
of Solo Antivirus. Install and update that, then reboot. It may want
to do a dos scan before windows loads...let it. Scan and delete
everything it finds UNLESS it says it can fix it, then let it fix it.

Repeat this process until it finds nothing else, or you have scanned
3 times. Which ever comes first. Then go to Add/Remove programs
and uninstall anything suspecious. Like Web accelorator etc etc etc..

Then go to http://housecall.antivirus.com and run a full scan.
fix whatever it finds. THEN, go to http://www.webroot.com
and download the trial of SpySweeper. Install, Update, and scan.
After the scan finishes and you correct the findings, scan again
with spysweeper.

If it still finds more after 3 scans, you should probably do one of
two things. Wipe and reload, or bite the bullet and take it to a
TRUSTED PC Repair shop.

Lesson 1: Never click anything that I.E pops up tongue.gif. Or any browser for that matter..Unless you've got some surfing experience under your belt.

Lesson 2: If it's the pop-up I think it is, then this is a exploit used through msn messenger. Disabling msn messenger should fix the problem, but I'm pretty sure if you close a certain port that will also work. Since I'm not sure what port it is you need to close, just download the most recent updates from Microsoft...And that should fix your problem. (Though, I don't recommand service pack 2 and up as they also turn off certain key features that I for one like wink.gif ).

Now onto your spy-ware problem.

Winfixer is a very common trick most typical internet users fall for.
They see a nice little message saying: Hey, you, guy who doesn't know anything about computer, download me and I can make all your wildest dreams come true. And so they download it. Thinking wow, this thing sounds neat tongue.gif. When really it's simply there to make your life hell wink.gif.

To fix this, I wouldn't recommend any of the links ViriiGuy posted, except for maybe ZoneAlarm, and more then likely Ad-Aware. Probably not ZoneAlarm though as it's just asking to be hacked.

What you'll probably wanna do to get rid of your problem is to firstly download Ad-Aware from lavasoft, and then the anti-spyware beta program from microsoft.com
These two programs will work hand in hand to get rid of 99% of the adware/spyware on your computer.

After you've run them both, make sure to set the anti-spyware from microsoft to be watching your computer at all times. This should further protect you from most threats.

Now onto what else you'll need.

1. The latest norton+worm protection (I'd recommend a suit product).
2. The McAfee firewall (Just because it's my favourite tongue.gif, and protects you from a great amount of threats out there!).

Once you've bought both these, and downloaded the two spyware protection programs, you're computer should be quite tight security wise wink.gif.

Infact, you could even do a google search on port scanning too make sure you're safe afterwards (this is more for the firewall). And have the website scan you. Then it'll tell you how safe you really are. (Though, I'd recommend posting which website you plan on using first, as it might not be a 100% safe website).

Hope these tips help your friend (or you wink.gif).

Post your feedback back into this thread.

And btw, if the problem on happened just recently a rollback using windows might be a easier option wink.gif.

Don't forget to continously update your products/OS aswell!

Thanks a lot man for you reply

We already had Microsoft Anti Spyware from before and it was not able to fix it so i suggested my friend to switch to Ad-Adware. It too failed to fix that. The person is having Norton Anti Virus which is up to date and so is his Windows.
As I have tried almost everything (not the method suggested by Virriguy as it sounds much time-taking) and nothing was able to fix that so I suggested him to format his system. The back-up was already there so we formatted the system and HOOSH now the problem is GONE.

Taking your advice I would ask him to install Ad-Adware + Norton Anti Virus + McAfee firewall. That might help him in keeping his computer safe for now.

Thanks everyone for your replies
