Firefox Or IE (New Version): Which One Is Better? - Which one is better?

illini319
On principle, Firefox is better. If for nothing else but to keep Microsoft developers paranoid that they may lose their command of the browser world. I also find that Firefox, because it is open source, is theoretically better than IE can ever be. It is more adaptable and customizable. When there are serious errors, the community is much faster to react.... etc.

Here is something every one has to see, its in favour of Micorosft Internet Explorer. View this site using both Micorosft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Now hover over the sentence "PLEASE VISIT OUR FORUMS FOR THE LATEST HAPPENINGS". See the diffrence and tell what do you feel about Mozilla Firefox. Click here to view the site I am talking about.

I feel Mozilla Firefox is sick, it cant even execute descent JavaScripts, where Micorosft Internet Explorer fully supports every kind of script. Also one more thing, Micorosft Internet Explorer can dispaly FTP folders whereas Mozilla Firefox cant (I tried using Mozilla Firefox to open Tripod FTP and it does'nt open, I dont' know about other hosting companies).

The only reason I think that Mozilla Firefox became so popular is that its FREE with most of the descent features and ofcourse with the search engine giant, Google. And goole was'nt there I dont think it would have ever enterd the competition. In that point-of-view, Micorosft Internet Explorer sucks as it is'nt for free. And those Micro$oft as*h**** have the stupid operating system authentication procedures to prove that your operating system is'nt a fake one, even for Micorosft Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2. What the heck...I wonder if the want to really test the browser or is it another way to get rid of piracy.

Well, as you suggest i visit that site with both browsers i use everytime -IE 6 SP1 and Firefox 1.5.0.3- and hover over the sentence and nothings happens in both browsers.
So i view the source code to check why nothing happens when someone hovers over the sentence and i find the answer to this. Nothing happens because the page dont load an external javascript file -in this case named animate.js- because this file is not uploaded to the server.

For your problem with FTP Firefox have some extensions that can help you. Check this if you want:
  • FireFTP: FireFTP is a free, secure, cross-platform FTP client for Mozilla Firefox which provides easy and intuitive access to FTP servers.
  • Digger: Allows you to navigate to parent directories in a URL, switch to the ftp equivalent of an http site (or vice versa), and climb through subdomains (e.g. go to http://example.com/ from http://sub.example.com/), all from a context menu on the Go button (and on the toolbar button provided by Go Up, if you have that extension installed). Digger was originally based on the Adam Lock's Diggler extension.
  • Diggler: Diggler is a small but powerful add-on for Firefox and Mozilla. It adds a menu button next to the address bar with actions relevant to the current URL, for example to step out to the parent directory, or to visit the equivalent ftp URL, or to visit the site in archive.org. A single click on the menu button also clears the location bar (much like the one in Konqueror) - useful for keyboard free browsing.

Here's a cool addition to your Firefox - an extension called IE Tab - which lets you view those IE-only/IE-optimized pages without ever leaving your favourite browser. This renders those pages using the IE engine.

You can grab it at:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/morei...ication=firefox

You can even set certain pages to load in IE only mode - for example the MSN range.. when you type in the URL Firefox automatically launches an IE Tab and opens the page in it.

This way, you can always view the same page side-by-side in two tabs in both Firefox and IE mode and check out the differences...

Who needs IE anyway smile.gif

I downloaded the IE7 Beta and found it a bit 'confusing' at first, especially because the menu toolbar was turned off by default. The theme wasn't that nice in XP and, like I said above, it was also added to the 'confusion'.

I am a Firefox fan all the way and have numerous extensions installed that improve my internet experience and do things IE has never thought of. I also think the fact the Firefox is open-source adds to it's popularity because programmers can make their own extensions and themes for Firefox, in the time it takes Microsoft to release one update for IE, Firefox has gone up another .1 in it's version number.

I didn't like the fact that IE6 was released and after 3 or 4 major updates they suddenly ended. Does Microsoft think they fixed all the bugs and that no one will find a different way to hack it's browser?

QUOTE

Security is more in IE when compared to FF. (Most of have the impression that FF is more Secure)

I believe that Firefox does have more security holes than IE does, but IE is still very vulnerable because the majority of Internet users are using the browser and hackers have hacked around the security patches in IE because they can attack a wider range of users than hacking Firefox.

You know, this is exactly what I love about AstaHost's forums... the people here are mature enough to have their own opinions, and not simply follow what others say and swim with the tide.

In another forum, the same question was asked, but in a different way... the thread subject was "What Makes FireFox SO MUCH Better Than IE?"...

Well, at first, I ignored the thread completely, seeing that everyone was simply on a crusade of bashing Microsoft. Don't get me wrong, I think Microsoft deserves every bit of bashing anyone can master... but if you don't know what you're bashing about, then that's stupid.

Finally, I got fed up with all the nonesensical, zero-value posts, and decides to throw in my 2 cents... I'll copy what I wrote there since it's very closely related to this thread, and it'll show my basic opinion about this subject...

Actually, I think the thread started with a presumtuous question in the first place. I mean, when the subject of this thread reads "What Makes FireFox so much better than IE?", the poster is already stating that FireFox is a quantum-leap better than IE. And here is where I beg to differ...

There's no doubt FireFox is MUCH safer than IE, in terms of security, spyware protection, and (to some extent) stability. And the Tabbed Browsing, RSS Feeds built-in support, and extensions put way ahead of IE when it comes to features. BUT...

FireFox has many problems as well. It's been repeatedly reported that tabbed browsing can crash FireFox... it's actually a big discussion subject on CNet right now. Plus, FireFox is a total memory hog. After only 15 minutes of running on my computer, I find it takes about 40-60 MB of RAM. That's A LOT, considering IE only takes 20 at most.

Add to that the fact that FireFox takes normally around 16 seconds to start up in the first place, AND that it tends to dramatically slow down if it runs for a while without restarting it.

So does that mean FireFox is worse than IE? Well, I don't think so. I think FireFox is a great browser, with tons of potential. But at its current state, it needs a significant amount of work, before I can honestly say that it's (and I quote from the original thread starter) so much better than IE.

And with the upcoming IE7, I believe the competition might get a little more heated. Yes, Microsoft's product have mostly been behind many other products in terms of security, and the word goes that IE7 has its major problems even in its BETA stage. But until Mozilla gets to work on the downfalls of FireFox, I cannot say with a clear conscience that IE is out of the competition.

I didn't mention any of the other promising browsers (e.g. Opera, Avant, etc.) because this thread seems to focus on FireFox and IE, and I didn't want to go off-topic.

Cheers.

This is something that I'd directly relate to the amount of RAM you have. When I had 512MB - I used to go through the same problems. Too many tabs would freeze up firefox or simply make the tab-switching action extremely slow and unresponsive. But once I got 1.5GB - biggrin.gif aha, well.. entirely different scenario. I could have about a bizillion tabs open together without even discernably slowing down firefox.. That's the situation I enjoy now - and I enjoy every single bit of it, thoroughly.. laugh.gif

There once again we come upon a totally unavoidable problem. Actually, firefox loads much faster than that in the barebones (without any extensions) mode. As you keep adding more and more extensions the load time increases. But even otherwise, it would be extremely difficult or close to impossible to make the firefox startup time anywhere near IE - coz, as I mentioned earlier, most of the IE code is already loaded when you boot into Windows. What you see when you click on the IE icon - is just the GUI frontend. The rendering engine and all other associated function libraries are already nicely cached in the RAM way before that. Firefox can never get to do this, unless MS in a freakish turn of events decided to release their core API library as opensource... laugh.gif

Ugghhh.... Come on, m^e, you don't have to rub it in my face... lol.

But I suppose you're right. This is probably a RAM-related issue. And admittedly, the add-ons and extensions have a role to play in this. But I don't think this is a totally bad thing... it's just a start. Sooner or later, I hope, these issues can be solved, possibly by over-the-board standardization between Mozilla and the extension-creators.

Absolutely true. But no matter what the cause of this situation is, the bottom line is that IE has a definite edge over FireFox, as long as we're talking about Windows OSes.

lol .. I aint posting no opinion on any browsers after readin M^e's post .. unless m shure of what i say tongue.gif .. apart from that .. i love FireFox .. tho i hate microsoft for not giving FF the support it should get on its Live Mail beta .. but slowly things have started to change and FF is widely comming to the picture. Just hope that someday everyone will start using FF .. cause due to different browser software, it becomes hard for web developers to decide on how precise the code should be ..

For example, there is a transparent code/plugin .. duno what to call it, i used it recently with a CMS skin, and it worked fine on FF with no problem .. but when opened in IE .. the transparency never was shown and the table alignment went weird. Hope microsoft really takes customer feedback seriousely in vista.

Dhanesh.
