I am planning to get a second hd drive for my pc and run gentoo as well as xp. Is it possible to boot from a secondary drive or should i install gentoo on the end of my primary hd and then mount /home on the second one?

other questions to follow.

I have three disks, I installed Mandrake on the third disk without problem, probably gentoo should be able to do the same thing.
I think Mandrake installed everything on the third disk except the boot part of lilo on the Master Boot Record in order to have the dual boot working correctly.
And everything worked fine with Mandrake, directly at my first trial, so should it also work for you.
Hope this helped

As far as linux is concerned it doesnt matter.. with linux you can have as many or as few partitons as you like, and you can put the partitons anywhere you like.

Windows somtimes gets upset if it isnt on the first partiton of the primary drive, but the linux boot loader (GRUB) can fix that should you need to move windows to anouther partiton.

how to reinstall GRUB after windows reinstall (9)
Ok so for a long time I had my dual boot working great, windows and ubuntu. But 2 days ago my
windows required a wipe and clean install because of some issues, like it usually happens after 8
months. So I reinstalled windows, well, first deleted the windows partition using the windows XP
install CD. Then assigned a partition for windows (same size) and left the ubuntu and swap partition
intact. But of course, windows deletes GRUB and replace it with their boot info, so now I can't
boot ubuntu (I can't choose). How can I reinstall GRUB without having to reinstal....

  4. Linux "hangs" On Boot
    (9)
A real quick post. I just though of installing the new version of the openSUSE distro 10.2. The
installation goes fine and after the reboot it just hangs (no HDD activity). I keep the power on
button pressed for a force shutdown and restart the Laptop with the same option and it starts the
desktop and i can work on openSUSE 10.2. I go home and start my laptop up and it hangs again, and
this time 3 force shut downs and restarts didnt help either. The last time i shut down the Laptop,
i sisnt choose to save my configurations, so that rules out an option of me screwing up ....

Linux - Windows XP dual boot (20)
I recently had upgraded my PC to a P4, but had restrained from going for a newer hard disk. I some
how stuck to my old Segate 40 GB hard disk. I am about to get a new hard disk, most probably a 80
GB. (Finally, I was able to pool some funds for the purpose). Now, why am I putting it here on the

have been using this OS called Knoppix that runs off the CD. I was quite impressed. Most of my

  10. Help: How To Dual Boot Ubuntu And Windows ME
I am running into some troubles (5)
I recently recieved a Ubuntu distro (Breezy Badger, 5.10) and installed it on my laptop,
uninstalling Windows in the process as I could not resize the FAT32 partition without erasing all
data and I loved it! After several days without the internet as I couldn't get the modem
working I decided to reinstall Windows ME on my laptop. I resized the Linux partition and created a
FAT32, enough for Windows and any programs, games and documents I would like, ample space really.

  11. Red Hat 9 Dual Ethernet Problems?

Hello, A while ago before I installed Fedora Core 5, I tried installing Red Hat Linux 9 on the
following system: -Intel Pentium III 900 MHz CPU -512 RAM -Dual Ethernet (10/100) However, during
installation, the Ethernet cards were never found so I couldn't get online. Now, I'm
installing Red Hat 9 on this (much) older computer, Pentium II and I don't remember the CPU
speed, 128 RAM (I think) and this time during install, Red Hat found the Ethernet. This system has
an 3Com card that was taken out of my other system. I was just wondering if Red Hat had any ....

  15. Ubuntu! Install
    My weekend project (5)
Well this weekend I decided to skip mini distrabutions and go for another larger install, I still
dont really want to install Debian or Fedora Core, so I decided this time I'd look at the
screenshots and see what my cup of tea was. So first thing was first, boot into Puppy and backup my
personal stuff, so on goes my old PC and it boots perfectly as normal, up until it comes to starting
the window manger (X), it doesnt load, so I type "xwin" and it doesnt start, it just says to xwin if
I want to restart the interface. So at that point, I really cant be bothered, so ....
  16. Suse And Dual Monitors
    it isn't working (1)
I'm wondering if anyone can help me with my problem. I have Suse 9.2 on my computer and I
recently added a second monitor. For some reason I can't get it set up correctly. My video
card is a Radeon 9800. I think that might be some of my problem since Ati doesn't seem to have
good driver support for linux. Anyway, I have Ati's drivers installed, not the ones that came
with Suse. I ran the configuration utility that came with the drivers, and as far as I can tell I
entered all the right settings. However, the X server refuses to start when I have bot....
