Disable NetBios (Windows) And Increase Security - Increase your computer security

Disable NetBIOS

Increase your security

If NetBIOS is enabled
Your Files and Folders , Work Group-name , Computer name , Loging- name will be shared in Internet

in Windows 2000

1- open Windows Explorer
2- Right click on My Network places and select properties
3- Click Internet protocol TCP/IP and select properties
4- Click on Advanced and then WINS
5- Select Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP and click ok
6- Restart your computer

If Windows displays “This connection has an empty … " message, ignore it and click ok

In Windows 95/98/ME

1- open Windows Explorer
2- Right click on My Network places and select properties
3- Select Internet protocol TCP/IP and click Properties
4- In NetBIOS, clear “NetBIOS over TCP/IP” check box and click OK.

You also should disable “File and printer sharing” in Windows 95/98/ME
1- open Windows Explorer
2- Right click on My Network places and select properties
3- Select Internet protocol TCP/IP and click Properties
4- In Bindings, clear “Clinet for Microsoft Network” and “File and printer sharing” check box and click OK.

If you need to share your files and printer in Local Network, you should use “NET BEUI Protocol” instead of “Internet Protocol TCP/IP”
1- open Windows Explorer
2- Right click on My Network places and select properties
3- click NetBEUI and select properties
4- in Bindings, select “Clinet for Microsoft NetworkS” and “File and printer share” and click OK.
5- restart your computer

Useful tutorial, but how does one go about finding whether he/she has NetBIOS?

Does your whole network have to be NetBEUI'ed or not ?

@guy: there are a lot of tools, I think the easiest one is to scan the NetBios port (135 ???)

Thanks for that, I was actually referring the question in order to round off the tutorial, the answer wasn't for solely for me, more for the community.

I think this is usefull when connected to win9x computer, however, when connected to windows 2000 or later, it would be best to use tcp/ip based smb protocol to share computer resource. smile.gif
