Designing Graphics - I've been offered

Hey i was offered a job by another Australian to do graphics designin, He said he would pay me 80% of what it sells for. I was just wondering is that a reasonable deal to work with or should i just forget it. I might give it a try and see how much business he gets and also how he works with the customers and most importantly other employees.

at first, you should've posted this topic at graphics design, but well, even i make mistakes biggrin.gif
to respond to your post: why don't you show us some of your graphics, and tell us more about the offer? - if you know, ofcourse... will it be fulltime or just 1 'graphic' a month or what? anyway, it sounds cool. does this other australian have a website where we can check out other of "his" work?

Make sure this guy is legit. It is easy to get ripped off by people. When I was in a gaming clan, our leader(in an attempt to get the members to stay of all things), contacted this graphics guy and had him do some design as a 'trial'. Then he took it and used it for our 'shiny new website'. Needless to say, this pissed off the graphics guy, and in turn things went downhill from there. So, people can be stupid, and they might try to rip you off.

Yes I was also ripped off , the same way MajesticFrog explained , I was the graphics designer , I designed a 3D model for a commercial product , and the company said " it's not good enough but thanks for your efforts " the problem is I was stupid enough to deliver them the model not just the Rendered shots , what do you know next month I read the newspaper and find not even another render of my model but one of the Renders I sent them in an a Full Page printed out ..

Called them to find out that the Manager has been fired and the new one decided to use the SHOTS they OWN as the older manager reported , I filed a police report and till now I am sitting .. no one gave me anything ...

nm .. a friend of mine told me :Well
" The law doesn't protect idiots " and I truly believe in that now tongue.gif

yeah, his site is www.kylefx.com but i'm not sure about it since i found out he is only 15 (the same age as me) but if he's a descent fella well yeah. And as everyone says it's hard to trust someone, thats why i'm going to probably accept and see what he does and how much i get and stuff like that. And for what type of employment i think it would be only like once a month or so. Is there anyway how i can protect myself from my designs getting stolen if i decided to go with it and he's not legit?

If you are new to the game
dont be afraid to get experience

lets say this guy rips you off
but you stil did a project
and that gives you something anyway

Just as long you dont invest a lot of money
and look into how you can make youre work ©
so you own it and not him
or maby that is part of the deal
that you sell him a product/service?

know when you give away youre rights
and know why you give away youre rights

Have fun smile.gif

I would say from a business stand point 80% of sale price is a good deal. Keep in mind that 80% of $0 is $0. My point is, if he doesn't do a professional job selling, you still end up with nothing. Also, as stated, I would take some preventative steps to prevent him from "stealing" your work. If you are doing printwork - use low resolution proofs to give him to use to sell the stuff. Then when you recieve payment THEN give him the originals. Whatever you need to do to protect yourself. He needs to understand that there are steps you need to take to protect your business interests in the deal (your $$). And you need to understand that he IS going to need SOMETHING to use to sell the product with (proof, sample, etc.). As long as you do a little preplanning it could be a good idea. And as previously mentioned, if you do happen to get ripped off - at least you have more experience for the next project. Just try not to spend to much time on the first design or two until you have HISTORY of payment with the guy.
Additionally, in any product business, the manufacturing cost would be around 10-20% of the final selling price or less plus an extra 10-20% additional overhead cost or more - so if you (the "manufacturer" of graphics) indeed get 80% of sale price you are getting an incredible deal.

Whatever you do - best of luck to you.
And would love to see some of your work

i'm a graphic designer, and 80% is great, if it sells, that is always a risk, a standard job fee is usually the bestway to go about it. Also i suggest that you sell all rights to the piece to the employer, that way you are not liable for and copyright issues. Good luck!

Hey everyone and thanks, i know he doesn't look that professional but he's only 15, and i'd say if i stuck with him long enough he might become a real serious business man. As for the copyright issues, thanks Ploforia, i'm going to take up your idea of giveing him a low resolution copy so, he can still see what it is but it's pretty poor to use. I think that would be the best method as then he won't be able to rip me off that much and, i'll test him. I suppose it's all about experience. For the first project i'm going to be working on it will probably be a basic logo for a company or somehting. Thx again everyone for your help smile.gif
