Confused Between Nvidia And Ati

i am watching to buy a new graphic card
but im confused between nVIDIA and ATI

i already used an old nVIDIA GeForce 2 MX (64meg)
worked without any problem
and now im using since 2004 the ATI RADEON 9600SE (128meg)
i never had any problems with it
it runs really good as my old nVIDIA

but times has come to change the card because its too much old for the games i play now
my system is
AMD Athlon 2800+ (Barton)
512 DDRAM (400MHZ) - ( 2 of theese = up to 1024DDRAM )
ATI RADEON 9600SE 128meg
Creative Sound Blaster X-FI XtremeMusic (awesome soundcard)
and the rest coming with

im using AGP and i cant use pci-express on my computer so im watching a new graphic card for AGP ONLY
i can spend from 100$ to 250$ ( but maybe, only maybe ( if i dont have choice) 250$ to 300$ )
i was thinking about the ATI X1600 PRO with 512 meg something like that but in the nVIDIA i dont know what to watch in nVIDIA, because i think they are more priceless than ATI .. i am not really sure....

but im playing the newest games and i want to have the best performance with the price to pay !!
It will be a pleasure to know your suggestions
and plz dont say that you like nvidia because your using it same thing for the ati users...
write what graphic card is better and if you know the competition of one ati card vs the nvidia...

for real im a lover of nVIDIA GeForce but when i want to spend all that money i wont watch if it is ATI or nVIDIA

At this level of price, you should certainly be sure your games will work.
I would say that you should first know which games you want to play. Then, have a look at the game disigner's website if this game is known as working, or if they have an expression forum and see if people successfully used this graphic card.
