Just took a look at one of my user's computer and found a very strange problem. For some odd reason, he must sign into AOL in order to use his internet. I would understand if this is required if he is using AOL as his main connection, but he is using a dedicated cable service line. The same thing is happening to his other computer (requires him to sign onto AOL first before he can connect). After playing around with it for a while, Internet Explorer connected without AOHell's assistance. I made sure AOL was completely signed off and tried a few more websites and both computers seem to have full access to the internet now. Why is this happening when he has his own cable internet line? I could ping sites like Yahoo and it even says in the system tray that it's connected to the network 100% connectivity. I know it can't be the cable service going up and down either because once we connect to AOL everything kicks in normally. Both of these computers are plugged into the router directly using a ethernet cable. I tried releasing and renewing the IPs for both computers to no avail. I'm going to take a look at his computers again next week to see if he still has access to the internet without signing onto AOL. Was working without AOL when I left. I'm hoping someone has encountered a similar situation before. Any ideas suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

It's probably a conflict with his modems drivers, sometimes it will work sometimes it wont. Have you tried uninstalling aol then trying to go online? I doubt that it is something on the isp end because as you said it only sometimes works with aol signed out Otherwise i'm not too sure but it definately sounds like some sort of conflicting programs or drivers to me -HellFire

You can check the proxy setting also. It could be that the software supplied by the ISP (not sure bout AOL, cause i don't live in US), could have configured the proxy setting to proxy through their server, this is usually done as a security measure to prevent attack from outside. If so, then without loggin in, you won't be able to go through the proxy server, thus, you can't access the internet I'm assuming you're using windows. Check under Settings\ControlPanel\Internet Property. Under Connections tabs, LAN Settings. See if "Use proxy server for you LAN ......" is ticked. Untick it then try again. If not, you can also check the DNS setting of your Network Adaptor. Either set it to the one provided by your ISP (not AOL in this case) or put it to auto detect. Other than that, i can't think of anything else. Good Luck

Yeah, that was actually the first thing I checked. No proxy was set and I even tried checking to automatically detect. Makes no difference either way. If the cable service is using a proxy, will it be shown once I connect through AOL (and check Internet Explorer proxy settings)? I have actually thought about removing AOL, but hesitated. I will download the setup file for AOL first since he uses AOL. Then uninstall it.... Any other suggestions? Will be returning to work on this computer early next week. Thanks.

Welcome. I only know of the proxy since our local ISP also provided such service. You mean you can ping Yahoo before login into AOL or after? Maybe you can try some site which doesn't need domain name. As in skipping the DNS, to find out if it has to do with the DNS server or it's configuration. http://72.14.235.104/ This is google's direct IP. Probably you can also check if there's any diff in various configuration before and after logging into AOL. Also look under Administrators Tools/Services, maybe AOL installed a service that trap such connection before login. You can also try to browse in Safe Mode (with Networking). That you can narrow down the possibility. If you can try on another pc/notebook(using the same configuration minus AOL) even better. Good luck

Yeah, I tried it without using AOL and it could ping Yahoo, which I found to be strange. I will definitely take a look at the proxy settings after I connect back to AOL...still doesn't make sense why it will connect now without AOL though. Will also try a laptop to see if it can connect without AOL. Tried that Safe Mode with Networking already and the same problem occurs.

Hmm, that's really wierd. Don't tell me the modem is controlled by AOL? What browser are you using? Maybe you can also try a diff browser.

I'm hoping not. I try to tell all my users to avoid using AOHell as much as possible, but most say they want to keep it. If it's controlled by AOL, then there must be some way to unhook it  I'll post some update on this next week when I will continue working on his computers.

Look at the machine's default gateway via the route command. Most likely that's getting screwed with when you are dialing aol when connected via ethernet. I wouldn't be suprised if AOL fux up the routing table every time it connects.

OK, at least can see some light now. There's 3 ways that the modem and router can be connected to work. 1. The modem is in PPPoE or ATM or something similar as for our ADSL case. Then then router is doing the dialing or login via the modem. You should be able to access the web base configuration on the router by login in to the gateway IP configured on the PCs. From there you can check those configurations. 2. The modem is a modem router, which itself has an IP can capable of dialing or login. It itself also has a web base configuration. You can try connect direct to it and see if it's auto assign IP. If it does, take a look at it's web base configuration. Most modem router can be configured as a "bridge", which it will work as per case 1 above. In bridge mode, the web configuration will be disabled. The only way to access it is to do a full reset to return to router mode. In bridge mode, the configuration is not necessary since which ever device is dialing it will be taking care of that. 3. Similar to case 1 above, bout this time, your router is acting just like a hub/switch. This way, the dialing/login is done on the PCs, once 1 of the PC has login, the rest of those connected to hub/switch will able to go online. This method is less use, and for me, i only seen it used at my ex-college, which they decide to change to case 1 after a few months. In this case, since no router is there, so IP will not be auto assign, each PC must have it's own IP configured manually. Hope this give you some clue. Good luck

At first I thought all of them needed to login to AOL since he had it installed on all three. But nope. Once one of them is connected, it seems like all of them will be able to access the internet via Internet Explorer. I'm narrowing it down to the modem like you are now and will be calling Cablevision on my next visit if I still can't resolve it. I'm not sure, but I think it does require some login. Is there a way I can find out either from the modem or router? The modem has the cable line connected to it and from there to the router. All I know is that the router has 4 ports and all of them are used except for one (only has 3 PCs).

Now i think of something. We need to isolate the issue see if it's relate to each pc or just the router + modem. After you login using AOL say on PC A, then PC A can go online, now can PC B and go online as well? Or each of them has to login via AOL before they can access internet? I'm not that sure bout cable modem, but does it need to configure with username and password on the modem, and login as well? If so, could be that the AOL login trigger the modem to login? (If this is the case, then the earlier scenario would be, PC A login AOL, then all other PC can go online, right? ) If it's not the modem that does the login, then it's configure via the router. For us, using ADSL, if it's a modem, the login is done either on the PC side or the router side. If it's a "router modem", then it itself can login. Another thing is, your router has a built in ethernet hub/switch? (that has nothing to do with AOL login, just curious)

That's correct. His ISP is Cablevision and it connected fine a few days before he called me in to take a look at the problem. They have a cable wire coming down from the roof to his office room. That's connected to a cable modem which is in turn connected to a router. All the computers are connected to this router using a CAT5 network cable. The problem is that it will NOT even connect without logging into AOL first. If we try to go online directly using Internet Explorer, it will give us a connection error or page not found message. I tried Google, Yahoo and other common sites that should come up easily. So what he has to do is open up AOL and sign in from there first. Then the internet access kicks in. The other two computers are having the same issues though. I thought it was AOL causing some conflict so I reinstalled Windows XP on two of his three computers (they needed to be reinstalled anyway  ). Now he has a clean install of Windows without any AOL garbage  ... but no internet access. This is why I'm stuck on this issue. It looks like once he's signed onto AOL, he can log off from it and still have the internet working after that. I have no idea why, but all the other computers (the other two with new Windows installation) will work perfectly fine after this. I don't see any reason why these two ISP's would be connected to each other as they are totally different companies as far as I know. I even took a look at the computers and they don't have a phone line plugged in. Even if he does use AOL dial up, I assume that the cable connection will take over if no other connection is found.

Well, here is my guess... The user obviously used AOL in the past and may have signed up for their AOL Broadband service. The AOL Broadband service allows people used to the AOL system to continue using AOL with a broadband connection. AOL has for a long time been manipulating the computers of its users to hide the true internet from them. At one point in time, AOL had a software version that would allow it's members to fully interact with non-AOL email addresses. Really irritated a lot of people! My point is, the AOL software on the system has probably made changes that are causing the problems. Since many AOL users don't fully understand the internet, AOL has managed to continue getting monthly service fees without any real service! What is really funny is that their are many AOL users that have never made it beyond the AOL network and into the true internet. So the AOL software sets the computer up so that when a user tries to use the internet, the AOL login screen is shown so that the user can gain access to his or her account. The settings are such so that if you choose not to login or you logoff, the browser is closed. Again, this is AOL assuming that the user is only using the AOL interface. And, this also propagates the idea that you can only connect to the internet with AOL. AOL wants it's users to believe that the only way to use the internet is with their serve so they designed their software to make that dream a reality. You should be able to use the internet by opening a seperate browser without logging in first. My suggestion is to uninstall any AOL software on the systems you are inspecting. vujsa

Issues With Accessing The Internet

users and in addition they won't troubleshoot it for me if i have more than one computer

Remote Desktop Connection Question
(10) Is there some way that I can use remote desktop without it locking the user's screen? As if

Broadband Modem Sharing
Accessing Internet from 2 computers (11) I like to share our broadband modem and access Internet from the second computer. The 2 computers
are not connected to each other. I am considering setting up a network of these 2 computers using a
wireless access point and 2 wireless network cards. I assume the access point and the braodband
modem will be attached to one of the computers and the other computer will be able to access
Internet through the access point. Is there any other way of sharing the modem eg. using adapters/

How To Keep The Internet Out From A Network ?
Using Dlink Giga lan switch, DSL ... see picture (9) So..in the picture below you can see the schematic I made. The internet enters in the first PC thru
the DSL box , and I wanna connect the internet PC with the other PC's with a giga lan speed. For
that I think I will need a second Lan card because the internet PC only has one lan port. Next I use
the Dlink 8 ports Switch. But I don't want the internet go from the internet PC thru the Dlink
and to the other PC's. Because I don't wanna put firewall and stuff on the other PC's.

Can't Connect To Internet In Linux
Driver problem? (8) I am new to linux and just installed Kubuntu. I have windows XP on my master primary hard drive and
Kubuntu is installed on my slave drive. Everything seems to work great except that I cannot connect

Share Internet Using Router And Modem That Uses Usb?
(13) Today I was trying to setup shared internet for someone and was having lots of problems with it.
They are using AOL DSL and had their ISP's modem. They have a Linksys router (forgot what
model...WRT something) and I tried almost everything I can think of to no avail. Here is the
problem. The modem connects to the computer using USB ONLY. It has an ethernet adapter in the back
of the modem but it will not work (needs the USB either way). After playing around more for over an
hour, I came to some "conclusion" that the other machines need the modem to be connected via ....
Internet Getting Slower And Slower
(8) Lately, my computer's internet has been getting slower and slower. When I check the connections
established in all my programs, there is my usual programs running. When I test the connection on
another computer, it was also slow. The ping rate between my computer and the router is <1ms, so I
don't think its the router problem. From 500 kb/s, it changed to 300kb/s, 100 kb/s and now its
30kb/s. Could it be a problem with the ISP?....
Ics Problem
Gateway stops internet (4) Of all things, and a tribute once again to the absolutely insanely primitive state of technology in
pakistan, my stupid cable modem works fine if it's all by itself, or with very simple ICS
enabled. However: if all i want to do is browse the internet, i can do it from any computer on the
network. But if i want to chat, or use outlook express, i've got to set a gateway on the ICS
computer. And the minute i do that, it shuts off the internet. As soon as i remove the gateway, the
internet browses fine again. It hadn't done this before, up till a couple days ago....
Cable Modem Keeps Rebooting
(13) Everyday my cable modem keeps disconnecting me. I get disconnected at least 3 times a day. I tried
reformatting my computer to see if any viruses is causing it. After reformatting it worked but after
upgrading it to service pack 4, it happened again. Is it the computer that's causing this or the
cable modem. The cable modem is pretty new, it's only 4 months old. Can someone help me with

Layered Networking

previously, due to the terrible quality of service here, i've decided a second connection may be

w/ the Apache2 Manual installed and accessible from the web, everything seems fine. So I access it

How To Share Inernet Connection Over Switch
3com 24-port switch (2) was at a rummage sale a while back and picked up some of these 3com 24-port switches for about a
buck a piece....they are only 10mb but they work fantasticly....i want to share inernet connection
over them....was at a lan party recently and they used the same thing and the guy told me just to
run the inernet connection over a crossover into the 1st port on the hub....then it will automaticly
be shared....is that how...cause some other people are saying to just bring the internet in on the

got a USB Wireless Adapter (for the Mac OS) and installed the drivers for it. Then I restarted and

Dialup On Wireless Network
