| | I had a background on my site that i got on the internet. I don't remember the name of the site but from it I was able to save the background (which was a textured blue background) to photobucket.com. I've had it there for awhile, but now, all-of-the-sudden it disappeared. I guess you can only keep things on photobucket for so long. But how do I keep a background on my site if I can't host it somewhere? Is there a way to put the picture in cPanel and use it from there? If there is, I cant figure it out. |

QUOTE But how do I keep a background on my site if I can't host it somewhere? You can upload this background on your site using the file manager upload facitility in your cpanel. then, this background will have an absolute address like "http://lonebyrd.astahost.com/myprivatefiles/mybackground.jpg". And then you can use this file as background on your web pages, this file wil stay there as long as you want to keep it there. I personnally have severall background files in my "myprivatefiles" folder, and I change from time to time. Was this your question ? Yordan

Yeah, you should really have the background and all other images too, on the same server as you keep the HTML files of your web page. This ensures that if the site is working, the images are working too. One point in keeping the images files elsewhere is to save bandwidth. In that case, photobucket (and others) are fine for images that don't really affect your sites layout (ie. photos, for instance) but for images such as backgrounds, border pieces and logos either use the same server as the site or have them on a trusty server.

What I ususally do is upload them 2 a sever much like photobucket. Heres the site I use most often. CODE http://www.imagehigh.com
I've never encountered any probs with this site. Another method I use is FTP.

Yeah, PhotoBucket probably got rid of the file since you were basically leeching bandwidth from them. Of course, you can store any type of file on a server. Just use file manager to upload the file to whatever directory you like and there you go. Of course, it is much easier with an FTP program but the file manager is fine. Just remember that in order for the file to be visable on the internet, it must be in the public_html folder or one of its subfolders. You may be able to get a copy of the file from google. While your page wasn't indexed on Google, the image on PhotoBucket might be. Go the Google and type in the address that you had for the background image on PhotoBucket in the search box and run a search for it, it is worth a try. vujsa

Photobucket isn't very reliable. The image-hosting site I use is imageshack.us, and I've never had a single problem reliability-wise.

QUOTE BTW are there any types of files that u cannot host here??? I had no problem till now. For background images or html files, no problem. I also used the Fantastico scripts which makes my life easy. To be honest, my free web hosting plan allows me rather few disk space here, so in order to save space I put no avi movies nor zip backups. Of course, you should also read the astahost rules, you may have a business site here, you may sell or buy, but everything has to be legal, no pornography, no forbidden things here.

Images that are in your homepage should not be hosted anywhere else other than in your domain. The problem with hosting files in file hosting sites such as photobucket is that they can easily be deleted or its file name changed for whatever reason. Especially if you hotlink an image that is hosted by another domain is a bad action because the admin of that domain may delete it and you won't be able to see that image in your webpage. So the best solution to this is to host your images under your domain, and if it's too big try uploading them to stable file hosting sites that do not delete your hosted files after 30 days (most file hosting companies delete your files after 30 days of inactivity for space conservation).

QUOTE(yordan @ Jul 26 2006, 05:37 AM) If you are singing, you may feel free to record your voice and put the music on your site, in order to make ourself worldwide known. If you bought a regular CD, you can put it on your site, provided that only the people who paid a regular copy of this CD (in a shop) are able to ear it. Or if you find a music totally charge-free. Some music records, after more than thirty years, have no more legacy or patent rights, nobody owns them any more, so your may feel free to offer them on your site. Unfortunately, most of the musics you could happen to ear today are strongly patented by the great recording companies, and you are not free to put them on your websites. By the way,Cunning Linguist , the subject of this post concerned the way of keeping a background image. If you are really interested by the type of files allowed here, maybe it would be smarter to open a new thread on that subject. Regards Yordan
