Audio Editing Programs - Which are the best?

Audacity is a free open source and professional grade audio record edit program but due to licensing reasons it can not be packaged with an MP3 encoder but if you get LAME which is also free you can then edit and save wavs as MP3s or many other audio formats. LAME is the same engine that is used by WinAmp to encode their MP3's so why not have the same software as WinAmp.

Personally I like Adobe Audition 1.5 the best, its got so many options. Syntrillium, who made Cool Edit, was bought out by Adobe, and now Cool Edit has become Audition.

I personally just use the incorporated into Nero. Its a good program never had any problems with it has always doen what i needed to do. This is purely simple audio editing ive done nothing major.

well... that depends of what are you trying to do ! if you are not interessed in pro editing, i think audicity is your best option ! but if you want to go pro, you should decide over Cubase and Coll Edit Pro (now Adobe Audition) ! But, when you wanna go pro, you have to take some money out of your pocket !
I think Audobe Audition is the best, it has all the filters available in a real studio, and with it you can achieve pretty much anyithing once you get more experience and find out how the software works ! You can mix, edit, masterize, apply filters and efects and so on ... ! I must advise you that it can get VERY CONFUSING at first, but you musn't let that scare you because the software is as hard to use as you make it ! If you want to do some advanced stuff, you need some knowledge, but the essential thing is that it is easy to learn how to get around the software !

i really like adobe audition. recently i have been using it to remix audio of concerts i video tape to 5.1 surround sound. there is a learning curve with the advance features but well worth getting to know once you know them.

I've used Audacity, Cakewalk Home Studio, Adobe Audition, Cool Edit Pro, and Sonar. Since audio editing isn't my thing, i didn't really have a favorite program, but since i do video editing with Adobe Premiere, i've defaulted to just mixing my audio trakcs there as well. it's pretty detailed and easy to use, but you can only export to wav. Though there are a host of wav2mp3 convertors available, so that's only a minor shortcoming

We use Apple Logic Pro for our sound works, but then again we've switched now to everything using Final Cut Pro Sudio apps phasing out all the adobe products but Photoshop and Illistrator.

Well, adobe audition is nice program, it has many functions, and really it's a legacy of COOL EDIT PRO. I use it for many years now for postproduction of my songs... you can hear my work at [I][/I]my webpage

I use Audacity for editing sounds themselves, but for more simple editing like cropping and such, I just use Quicktime because it puts less stress on the computer. I also use Quicktime to record vocals. I don't know if you are trying to, but I use easy beat to do all my MIDI work. The free version is okay unless you want to edit things over two weeks old, or over like 12 measures or somewhere around there, but as most of mine are one-off, four to eight measure hiphop beat loops (which I export and throw into audacity). I really can't wait to pick up Logic Pro, Garageband, and Reason...
Warning: Most of what I've mentioned are Macintosh programs.
