Nice idea ... thanks for sharing. We generally put favicons on our sites that we develop. However they don't tend to work with IE. Given the large volume of people that use IE ... I would love to have something working in it. Does anyone know why? If you want an example, to see the code, visit www.vividelements.com

That's actually in his original post: QUOTE(Niran @ Sep 11 2006, 07:12 PM) Animated ICONS (GIF Files) presently works only with FIREFOX & Netscape! IE will show only static ICO Files
The file format in which the browser accept the favicon is different. Even static GIF files won't work as favicons in IE. By the way, Opera (9.01) loads the first frame of the GIF as favicon so it's not animated. Something you might wish to consider when you create your icons. I have one problem with animated icons. See I like to have my favourite sites up the below the address field in "personal bar" or "bookmarks toolbar" and for sites that have clear favicons, which I can easily associate to the site I remove the text for the bookmark. So up there I have just bunch of favicons and I can fit a lot more quick links Animated icon on my browser just doesn't sound very tempting..

Forgetting about the animated icons for a moment ... how do I get favicons to work in other browsers? (IE). The method we use for Firefox is: CODE <LINK REL="Shortcut Icon" Href="favicon.ico"> (1) It doesn't work in Explorer. (2) It doesn't come up on the bookmark list when you bookmark it. Does someone know how to address these two questions? Thanks, Gin

( I mean , creating one jpg or gif file and renaming that to .cico wont work ) May be, thats the problem! Check my page: www.niranvv.com in your IE! whether it shows the Icon or not? ( I can see my static Icon in the address bar itself for IE 7 )

I don't really like the idea of using gif anims to have an animated favicon, in fact I don't like anything sliding in the browser even the scrolling text done with javascript, I usually close the site and mentally say "a stupid webmaster" But this is just my opinion. For the favicon work, you need to save the file with the right .ico format, you can convert to ico anything using Gimp or Photoshop if you have it, moreover, you need to show the right path to it, say if you write href="favicon.ico" it will search for it in the current address directory, so use the right path.. Sometimes favicons doesn't save in bookmarks too, maybe because of bad headers sent by the server, don't know though..

QUOTE(Niran @ Sep 20 2006, 09:14 AM) Check my page: www.niranvv.com in your IE! whether it shows the Icon or not? In my IE 6, there is no icon. For the most part, I don't get favicons in IE. Makes me wonder if the issue is on our PCs. But clients tend to have the same thing happening too. Are there any settings in IE that affect this? Gin

Internet Explorer 6 is not supporting FavIcons! But Internet Explorer 7 is supporting FavIcons ( Only Static .ico files, not animated Gif one )So It not the problem with your coding! But Internet Explorer 6 will show your icons in the bookmarks field! Just bookmark your site in your browser and verify that one!

Different favicons for FF, in personal brand strategie
Animated Favicon With Scrolling Text!
I've analysed my webstats and concluded that 40% of my visitors are FF users. Therefore, I've created separate favicons for Firefox.
It's actually been launched last week. I've created six animated favicons (different favicons for different tabs/ares), integrated with my (own) personal brand strategy. That implies that my face is shown, including attributes. On opening a page (or bookmarks) they are standing still, actually 80% of the time. After a little, sometimes funny, movie is played in the favicon.
Here's the site and a posting with lots of background info:
www.Erwinvanlun.Com/ww/full/animated_favicons
For the next step I consider let the favicon 'play' with the title or starting a sound. That would be great. But it should all be very subttle, as lots of animated favicons will soon irritate.
I'm curious what you think.

It'll show up in the bookmarks. There currently is no setting that you can change. [N]F
