| | Hello all,
I need to upgrade a computer to increase its performance for image processing with adobe photoshop cs. The problem I have is because digital pro-images are quite large (12megapixel) the computer totally slow down when opening, aplying a modification,etc.. anything you do will take a long time.
The actual computer is a AMD athlon 64 +3400 with 1Gb of RAM. Graphics card is nVidia 5200. Hardisk is SATA 7000rpm (seagate)
What do you improve to achieve more performance for this kind of work?
As this computer is not for gaming, I don't know if a better graphics card would help. More RAM will speed up anything? The CPU is ok? or it is too much slow ?
As you can see, in hardware I'm plenty of doubts so any expert's advice will be appreciated.

You can check the taskmanager to see if you need more memory. Look at the program you use (Photoshop I asume) and see how much memory it uses. Also check out how much memory is used in total. If this is over 850Mb, you'd better get some more ram. The cpu is okay, tough there are faster models available. I don't know whether the program you use supports multiple cpu's, if so, you might consider upgrading to a dual core cpu.

Cpu Upgrade But It Doesn't Work
(11) Okay, so, here's the deal. The guy who originally installed my old CPU installed it in a manner
that the fan on top of it melted off any product numbers and all that. All I know is that the place
it hooks into says mPGA478B. It was originally a Celeron. Well, when taking it out, the pins were
bent, so I needed to buy a new one. I went online to find one, searched the mPGA478B thing, cross
referenced it with the Dell, it said everything was a-okay. BUT, once I received it, it didn't
work. The new one is an Intel Pentium 4, Northwood Core 478 Socket with spe....

New Computer
What do you recommend? (54) Ok well we are considering purchasing a new computer. We've looked at a few different options,
mainly Dell. Some of the features are already decided, like this: Windows Vista Home Premium 2GB
RAM At least 320 GB hard drive 22" wide-screen monitor The graphics card and sound card
aren't really such a big deal, we do not use this PC for gaming/video-editing anyways. The PC
will primarily used for Office applications, web development, general Internet/email use, watching
DVDs and learning about Windows Vista (I can't wait to use User Account Control!). The....

New Computer?
Need opinions (24) For those who don't know, it's been 5 years since I got a desktop, and now I'm pondering
if I should overhaul my rig (getting a new one is NOT an option). I'm going to fuse both old and
new parts together to overhaul my current rig. My main concerns are: speed, durability,
extendability and cheap. My budget is approxiately $500 max. My current rig: Intel Pentium 4 2533

don't want to have to wait 10 minutes for everything that you click on. Any recommendations
would be great. (not sure if this is exactly the category to post this in) Also any recommenda....

Computer Bugs
I've never seen anything this primative with PCs... (9) My PC had been making strange noises and running slower, so I assumed it was time to clean the
fan/cooling fins. I opened the side panel thing to see cockroaches coming in and out of an open PCI
slot. So I got a PCI slot cover. When I moved the PC to my desk I found it look about like rat's
nest inside. Roaches were swarming the PC Fan, Cards, Disk Drives, Power Supply, etc. Probably
hundreds maybe a thousand. I've never seen so dusty a CPU fan in my life, the all the cooling
fins were totally covered in dust and crap. I cleaned the fins and the fan. Its runnin....
I Guess An Upgrade Is In Order.
It's been 5 years but should I do a little or a lot? (6) Even at the time that I built it, it was a modest machine. I spent a lot of time shopping for the
perfect components for my system and my budget. My first PC was an IBM Aptiva which was limited
in the amount of upgrading that it could handle. I quickly ran out of memory, CPU, and HDD
usability. I maxed out the memory, added the second hard drive (a total of 8 GB ), and the processor
didn't have too many faster version available. When the motherboard finally lost it's floppy
drive controller, I was stuck since the Aptiva motherboard and case were both proprie....
Need Advice On PSU
(2) I'm currently using a Generic 400/450watt P4 PSU. When I upgrade some hardware components soon,
I'm thinking of getting a better quality one to make sure everything is fine (and I probably
should have gotten one ages ago), but I don't have a whole lot to spend on it. Basically what
I'm looking to find out is what the equivalent is for a better quality PSU, as iv'e heard
say a 350watt antec would beat the pants off a generic 450watter or some such. I am looking at:
350W "Antec" Basiq ATX Power Supply, ATX12V version 2.01 complaint, Dual +12V Ouput....
Dell Computer "shuts Down" When Opening Email
(31) I have a Dell Optiplex GX 270 computer here and the problem is that it shuts down randomly when
viewing email in Outlook. It doesn't seem to do this when doing anything else online. Could a
network cause issue this kind of problem? I'm going to see if the other machines are doing this
as well. The funny thing is that the machine itself still seems to be running. The light on the
monitor is orange, but the computer's light is green and the fan is still spinning in the back.
These Optiplex machines have the 4 LED lights in the back to show any error alerts (if....
Computer Suddenly Turning Off
Well it seems my computer doesn't like me. Sad huh? (28) My computer has been acting in a weird way for some time, and I don't remember doing anything
that could cause this hardware-wise. I'll try to describe it: After some time powered on, the
system suddenly *poof* shuts down in a harsh way. I press the Power button but it doesn't turn
on. Then, I remove the power cable from it's back, wait for some hour(s) and turn it on ok,
until it turns off again. I'd risk also to say that the 'uptime' I get after a shutdown
is somehow proportional to the time I left the power cable off it. Some would say it&....
Buying New Graphics Card ... Need Advice On Compatibility
Nvidia for sure ... but which one for my M/B (19) I'm going to buy a new graphics card for my ASUS A7N8X-VM 400 Motherboard. It has an integrated
nVidia GeForce 4mx GPU, but I've decided it's time to upgrade cause I'm learning Maya
these days (also, all the new games need pixel shader support). What I'm worried about is which
graphics card is supported on my Motherboard. My motherboard supports 8x graphics 1.5V. Here are
some pics from the motherboard manual: Photos Gallery - PicTiger Does this mean
ABSOLUTELY ANY 8x graphics card will work with my motherboard? Does that include 2.0 ....

Adding More IDE Ports In Computer
(18) Hi, is there any way I can add more IDE ports to my computer? I'm building a computer from

adding multiple hard drives to this computer and with the current setup, there will be no more free
IDE ports. I did some searching before posting here and found some users mentioning a PCI IDE
Controller card. I searched online and all I found are ATA/SATA/RAID Controller Cards instead. Are
these the same? I know I had to use a controller card on my older Windows 98 deskto....

Building A Computer Component By Component

Advice On Eliminating Audio Noise, Please?
(21) I have a PC-based recording studio with a very specific problem. I am getting a sort of scratching
noise through the speakers when I move the mouse, load software or scroll web pages. It seems like
it is coming from the motherboard, but I can't tell for sure. I changed hard drives and sound
cards and it still exists. I'm using the on-board video controller, so I haven't yet
eliminated it as a suspect. Other people have described having the same problem and it was most
noticable for them when they had a laptop plugged into a PA system. They could hear the scra....
