512MB Graphics Cards - Buy one now or later?

Looks nice, but it kinda makes me think... 512MB, that's as much RAM as my laptop has... And it costs more than my laptop did, too.

I have been looking into building a computer filled with the latest technologies, and I was trying to find out more about these monster graphics cards.  Mainly, I would like to know what type of power supply it would take to power one of these monsters!

Are there any motherboards out that can fully support the speed of these new graphics cards, or will I have to wait for some new type of motherboard to be developed?
*

Yes, there are motherboards, supporting SLI. Actually, every motherboard with NVIDIA nForce4 SLI chipset can support these "monsters", better or worse.
If you're going to build latest tech system, I advise you to use ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard as a platform. It's simply best for today. It supports all power needs for SLI technology.
The power, neede for SLI system is about 500-800W depending on other configuration.

There are more motherboards, not only ASUS smile.gif
Check it out here for more info about buildin SLI system.

Wasn't it like 8 months ago when games actually started benefit from having more than 128MB?

If there is no actual games that use the whole memory I think its kind of pointless to buy that expensive cards right now.... You could buy a top-notch 256MB card now and save the money and then get a top-notch 512MB card when the games get there. They'll be lot cheaper then too.

But yeah, guess it'd be cool to show off to ignorant friends. biggrin.gif

the empty calorie
You know, I've never seen an actual difference between seeing a game run on a Geforce, or a Radeon card...but wasting that much money on a card such as that is a waste. All tis just for bragging rights. Well then again, you're windows users....you guys have got it all wrong. Besides, isn't gaming so much better...on a console?

Hell no! My eyes starts to hurt when watching TV for few hours. Yes, yes I agree, I could solve the problem buyng new 100Hz TV.
But then begins other problems. Some months ago I've played Unreal Tournament Championship 2004 on a X-Box. It was terrible... Why? Becouse controller is not for first person shooting games... If I've had a mouse, I hadn't died a single time.
For me there are no better choise than PC for gaming smile.gif

My GeForce FX 5600 has 256mb of video ram and it is running fine for me. While the clock and memory speed is lacking, the textures never really end up using all my ram space. After playing games like Planetside, which lets you use VERY high detail textures and is a very ram hungry game, I'm sure that 512 won't make much of a difference, if any.

I always have had top notch gpu's and the reason that I need them is not for gaming. Although I do play games occasionally the main reason I need alot of memory on my gpu is for modeling games. Ohh... and by the way Half Life 2 was made using 512 so it actually looks better when your have that much memory on your gpu. +

I have finally decided to get a dedicated Graphics card for my PC. My budget is around 300 USD. I
have been going through the models at nVidia's website and found the models (8600 GT & 9600 GT)
to my liking. My friend suggests that I should go for 8800 because it provides greater performance
than 9600 GT. To me, perfomance is not as big a factor as compatibility, in terms of being able to
play the latest games, is. In that respect is it better to go for the chip which offers higher
memory? My motherboard is Intel 915GAG which supports PCI Express. Will a model stated....
