I press Cntrl Alt Del and then click Task Manager on my computer (windows 2000) but cannot open a
new window to display the list of open applications, processes etc. In the status bar I can see a
blank box and a small green square associated with the Task Manager. This shows the CPU usage %.
Recently I installed MSDE2000 software (MSSQLServer) and I had to make a change to a Control Panel
setting. I am not sure if this has corrupted Task Manager. I am wondering if there is any patch to
fix this....

Back in Windows XP if you were not on a domain CTRL + ALT +DEL would open up Task Manager. In
Windows Vista that key combination opens the secure desktop that allows you to do many more thing.
To directly to Task Manager, hit CTRL + ALT + ESC....

My Volume Control icon disappeared. I went to Control Panel and choosed Sounds and Audio devices
properties and when I opt for 'Place Volume icon in the taskbar' I got this error message
(see the pic below): What can I do to have it back in the taskbar?...

My system is Windows XP SP1. The icon of sound volume control in task bar disappeared. It does
appear after I tick the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" in Control Panel -> Sound and Audio

At school they've decided to force us to use a proxy server (a sucky one because it's more
offline than operational). As an Opera user, it's just a matter of pushing F12 to enable or

I'm looking for something (preferably freeware if at all possible), for creating icons for
Windows XP generally (not sure if I need XP specific features) that has a focus on or very good
tools to create purely textual icons of up to 64x64 at the very least (so it display reasonably well
in explorer etc). I more or less want to create mostly textual icons, but nicer ones with effects
and such that don't cause any transparency issues (like having a pink background and trying to
anti-alias the text, only to have it screw up when the pink background is made transpar...

This happened last night when I hit ALT+CNTL+DEL to quit a process. Now the Task manager is missing
the minimize, close bar and the ability to choose Application/Process/etc.. And this is after a
couple restarts and everything. Now if I have to force quit an application, the task bar is always
on top, does not show up in the sistray and requires a restart to get rid of. This is with XP

what would happen if you were to opened your task manager, click on processes, and started ending
processes ? i know that processes are programs that are running on your system. some are being used
by your system and some are by the software that you have. but, how do you know which processes are

Hello, I am using a modified explorer executable (just renamed is all, I couldn't be bothered
with the reshacks these days). Some time ago, I modified some icons (such as file types), and "My
Computer" in particular. For some reason nowadays, it defaults to that annoying white unknown icon,

Hey, I'm using vista and I'm trying to connect to my mom's computer because it has the
printer on it. There seems to be some odd issue between Vista and XP. Here's a basic scenario:
1) I go to explorer and type in \\MBST005 which is my mom's computer, XP Media Center 2) The
shared docs/printers come up and I double click the printer that is shared and what everyone uses.
3) I get "Access Denied" 4) I try to open a shared folder and it works. I can save, open, create and
delete files. Has ANYONE who uses a shared printer able to use vista to connect?...

So, I have 4 computers at office, and they all share same DSL internet connection. We share the
connection on 1 computer, while others acces it via Internet connection sharing. And everything
works just fine, until I shutdown all computers and start them up again. Then they loose internet

Firefox there is no connection, but the weird thing is that in right bottom corner of taskbar it
shows that blue "computer icon" that there is LAN and another one that there is internet connec...

Three(ish) questions: 1) Does anyone know where (and even in what file if it is in a dll) the icon
