They have some helpful little apps over at

use them together with AdAware ( it's not slow it's efficient! )

If my system runs slowly i do only few things to improve the speed:
1. Clean the registry...You think it's not usefull but you must know what to remove. Just run "regedit" and search a uninstalled program or deleted files or something unneccesary and remove them.
2. Using regedit find the startup folder and delete the programs that you don't want to start.
3. If it doesn't help check for a virus with kaspersky...It is not very sure that you will find anything but just try.
4. Nothing helps....Take the OS CD and reinstall....

If you are not agree tell me to discuss this..

how about cleaning those registries? this would help too to make your system more efficient and faster.

i don't use any spyware or firewall to make my pc running faster... and i remove spywares with hijackthis.

too bad...merijin ended his support for this program...

one way to speed up your computer (if you have an old one) is to get a shell replacement. In the system.ini file, you change the line "shell=explorer.exe" to another program. On my old 486 (which had windows 98 on it), to make it faster, i set the shell to "shell=progman.exe" which loads Program Manager from Windows 3.1 (yes it still exists in windows 98 and even in xp!). This made my 486 much, much faster since it only had 16mb of memory and explorer was taking up all of it (whereas progman.exe only takes up ~300kb) :)

Well, I'm not worried that my computer is running slow since I have a really good processor (2.66GHz) and my RAM neither (1024MB). Spyware, now that's somethin I should look into removing. I don't know if I have any, but I'll look into those programs.

under the processes tab, you might see names of programs which you don't want running, e.g. Apache goes under "apache.exe" there. or you usually can guess which processes are linked to which programs, e.g. Perfect Disk Scheduler goes under "PDScheduler.exe" there.

if you're unsure, you can do a search using the name of the process and there'll probably be results leading to people asking the same question about the process in discussion forums.

If you want more speed and memory free, you can also safely remove unnecessary services in win xp, for example, if you dont use your pc to receive and send fax, why have this service running eating memory.. well check this page and you can see all winxp services and description.

That's good idea, however, virus alway names its process with the same name in windows and make us some difficult to find it manually. Besides, in Windows XP, there are so many processes, it's hard to find the bad process.

I disagree. I'm a firm believer in combing for unnecessary services.

Remember that these services consume memory and CPU - so anything that isn't necessary has to go! That being said - I agree that there are many people who are not savvy enough to do this with confidence.

But with a little knowledge and application you can speed up your machine greatly. For instance, if you don't use any form of unix whatsoever, why run an NFS service, or LPR/LPD, for that matter. Chameleon used to have a service (PortMapper??) that used to just bog machines incredibly, yet most people never used it.

There was a program that had a similar name to Spybot Search and Destory that was spyware. Spyware Search and Destroy is NOT spyware itself. Where you heard that I have no clue.
Where did you hear it anyway? If you're still a bit suspicious go here:
http://www.safer-net...ress/index.html
And you'll see press coverage of spybot. If its spyware how come it got press coverage and people love it? It also won some awards as well

We've all pretty much switched over to AdAwar 6.0 by LavaSoft. This is a really good program and deserves mention. I have no interest in AdAware or LavaSoft, it is just great stuff.

js :)
