You can't just download it and play it, for starters, where is your serial number. You download the trial and purchase a code from Microsoft then enter it in to the Trial. Or, if you afford £199+ / $199+, use OpenOffice and StarOffice and other opensource office programs.

microsoft is offering free 2007 Office trial (it has everything) for 2 months! and you can get a code and keep it later if you like.

On the Microsoft website you can get a trial of the newest edition of office, but I'm pretty sure it's only for vista.

it will work on windows xp. i have tried it and works http://www.astahost....icons/icon1.gif

Just one solution: OpenOffice (like everyone else has said...)

It's EXACTLY like MS Office, just minus all the bogus licensing, GUI features, and buggyness (if that is a word). However, my mom got me MS Office 2003 for only $15 because the college she used to work for had this contract with Microsoft and the software was really cheap... so that's the only reason why I use it, else I'd use OpenOffice.

OpenOffice is good when it comes to standards uniformity, but it's still quite large if you just want some spreadsheet operations. A windows version of Gnumeric can do well in most circumstances as well. I've been using it together with Abiword (great, small, and simple word processor) for some time, until I needed the more advanced functions of the whole OpenOffice suite.
I guess there are some other open-source alternatives to Powerpoint as well. If you just want to view Powerpoint files there are different versions of Powerpoint Viewer available from Microsoft's website for free. You can find the newest version here, while the older one (much smaller but still handles a lot of newer PowerPoint files) is available here.

I was just playing with the Beta when it came out, but the thing is, is that I really disliked the revamped GUI. I liked Office XP better.

If you want something free, I suggest OpenOffice or even easier alternatives like GoogleDocs/Spreadsheats for basic Word Processing.

If you want real advanced word processing, try LaTeX. Not really suited for general use though, it's populair with scientific papers because of the extra power you get in controlling how equations & symbols are displayed.

Myself I definitely prefer working with Office Vista, but I don't think you (the OP) will miss out on features with OpenOffice. Just get something with a spell checker, you need it :\
