As I know, safe mode isn't as needed as it used to be in the past, current software running on software is quite safe if you don't get in trouble with a hardcore hacker, but on old servers even an idiot could do something bad with you files without safe mode, but the thing is if it isn't php, when a lot can be done with perl if it is present, as I know safe mode won't exist in php6, I would also change some stuff too for php about the security, but it isn't only php fault, it is the software, I am talking about the owner of files, if you upload with ftp or cpanel or create one with php, it really can get on your head..

Yup, the problem is a fair number of hosts have safe mode on (especially the free ones) simply because it "encourages" people to go for their premium option. Almost every free host out there could offer a lot more, take off the restrictions etc. but they don't because they want to see them upgrading to their paid option. Astahost is great in that it is free, flexible, and offers far more than most free hosts do (especially the 30 credit option which I'm working towards ).

Urgh, safe mode...there's nothing quite like having your cunning coding efforts foiled because someone somewhere has a little 1 where they should have a 0. Sure, it stops you completely ruining things (in theory), but I'd rather have the freedom to do what I want. There's other great examples out there, such as Game Maker's "secure mode", where you can't alter certain files. Fantastic if you don't do any serious work with it, but when you're tinkering with data structures and using the program to create/delete files, it's an absolute nightmare to find out how to turn that damn thing off.

Still, as you could potentially delete every file on your hard drive, I suppose that secure mode is useful for people who don't really know what they're doing, just as safe mode is there for the "casual" coder.

If you're referring to PHP safe mode, all our servers feature safe mode OFF for your higher coding experience.

Do you need this mode to be ON?

By the sounds of it, it probably is off on all hosted accounts, but it would depend on the server setup (I think we have several here don't we?) and whether it's possible to modify the option.

Apparently it is off in mine. Maybe it is off in everyone's also.

If I remember correctly it is turned on, but you can find out easily by logging into your cpanel and then click on PHP link on the left side of the menu, then go to edit > find in this page > type safe mode and it will be listed as either on or off.
