I just installed Vista for a friend and took the opportunity to play around with it a little. I came across a rather annoying problem i cant resolve currently.

The icons on the desktop (Folders or applications icons), when hovered upon shows a white highlight box. When the icon is selected the highlight stays. This white box is pretty annoying and if i dont want that to appear, what should i do. Just like the icons in XP without any border.

I searched online and i found this one solution but i dont know how to reach "Display Properties" or "Customize Desktop and Web" or "Lock desktop items". So was wondering if anyone could help me out in this.

QUOTE
Go to System Properties and click on Advanced and Performance Settings. Make sure to check the box in the “Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop”.

If this does not work, go to Display Properties and click on Customize Desktop and Web. Make sure to uncheck the box in the “Lock desktop items”.

Regards
Dhanesh.

It's not a problem. It's how Microsoft built the system to behave like that. Just click the wallpaper again to have the white box deselected. If you seriously get annoyed by the white box, revert your theme back to Windows Classic.

You'll lose the Aero and Vista look, but at least the "problem" is gone.

And there i thought vista could be customized. Anyways, i think he learned his lesson lol. He uninstalled it and installed XP. All that money down the drain.

You can customize Vista, however, there's no skins available right now, unless he go and create it himself.

Well it looks like this issue got resolved. smile.gif I was just noticing that on my desktop icons yesterday when I decided to change to a black wallpaper. It does get annoying, but at least there's a solution for it, which I should try. Right now. Now the only thing left is to have Windows come up with different skins for Vista or have a program where people could create some. It gets annoying seeing the same black bar (albeit well polished) all the time on the desktop. I tried WindowBlinds but it abruptly messed up my PC, which then led me to reboot the entire system.

as said above, there's currently no way to do so. It's just like the blue highlight in older themes.
