Hi. I need help with installing a video/graphic card in the PCI Express x16 slot. My motherboard is Intel 915GAV. This problem applies to both Nvidia and ATI card since I tried it first on Nvidia and then I go and exchange the card for ATI. I slotted the card into the PCI Express x16 slot and when I turn on the computer, the fan of the video card is spinning. However, Windows did not detect any new hardware and when I plug in the monitor cable, there is nothing on the monitor. Btw, my motherboard comes with in-built video card, Intel DMA video card. I tried going into the BIOS and changing the video to PCI Express as primary but it didn't work. So, any suggestions out there?
Thank you for the help. |

You mentioned changing the PCI Express video card to primary. Does that mean the on-board video was disabled automatically after you did this? If not, make sure you disable it yourself.
See if this works...Take out the PCI Express video card and power on your computer. Go into the BIOS and see if it's possible to disable the on-board video now. If so, do it and then save the changes and power down. Install the new video card and see if that boots up...change the BIOS settings accordingly if needed. If that still won't work, I would check to make sure that it was installed properly...make sure it's seated all the way inside. |

Good advice WeaponX..
You said that the fan on the card is spinning? is there also a connector on the card for additional power? a power socket like on a HD or CDrom? it could be it needs more power and cant come on fully till thats connected? Whats the exact model of card? you said you tried an Nvidia then an ATi..Which ATI? Have you tried the ATI forums? Ive seen lots of probelms with the Intel Video chipsets and the way they handle two cards in the system is not good ;(( Also take a look at the Intel support site. Good luck finding a solution ive spent days one time trying to get a Compaq desktop pc to accept a Matrox dual head card and failing badly to the point of throwing knives at the Compaq Mark420;) |

Can you give us a detailed specification of your machine, that may help us to see what's the problem.

I would do theese sepsin a slightly different order. I would :
1) First, plug the new video card and boot the system on the internal video outtput. 2) Install the video card drivers. Just for fun, see if it works with the new drivers, some motherboards "naturally" see that there is an external video adapter. if not, go to step 3. 3) start reboot, stop the boot in order to go inside the bios settings, and say "disable the internal video". Remember the previous settins, in order to be able to come back to the initial settings. 4) Plug the display on the new video card, it should work. Regards Yordan |

Thanx for all the replies guys. I really appreciate it.
Ok, my problem is still not solved yet. I don't seem to find "disable on-board video" in my BIOS. Only got "disable on-board audio". The ATi customer support suggested that i decreases the shared memory for the on-board graphics as a way of disabling the on-board graphics. I did that and now my monitor display lines of incomprehensible stuff. I can't even get into BIOS to undo the changes. And my ATi card is still not working. The fan is spinning but it is still not working. I don't think it needs a new power source since there is no power cables equipped with it. So, another question now is how do I get back the on-board video card to work? I'm now in a cybercafe so here is what I recollect about my spec: Intel D915GAV motherboard Intel processor 3.0Ghz 1.0 Ghz RAM, DDR400 On-board audio, Realtek Intel DMA video Sapphire ATi Radeon 700Pro Hard disk, etc.... Any help would be appreciated. Thanx. |

Ok, I got back my on-board video to work. I took out the CMOS battery and put it back on. That sets everything back to default. But still working on the ATi video card....

Yeah... done installing my video card. Couldn't post it here earlier coz something wrong with astahost website. Did anyone else experience problems with astahost last week? I tried logging on and some database error occured.
Anyway, the Intel guy suggested updating my BIOS. I looked at the document detailing the changes that they made to the BIOS and there it was, something like correcting some problem with the PCI express slot and video card. Once I installed the new BIOS, everything works smoothly. Cheers to Intel for their customer support. |

I know this is a positively ancient thread, but I'm running into the same problem!
I am using the Intel D915GEV board, with a ATI R300 card. I know the problem is that I need to disable my onboard video, but I can't seem to find where to do it in the BIOS! There are options for everything except video. I am using Intel's BIOS number EV915010A-86A-0482 (I think thats it) .. Its current from the Intel page. All of my other drivers are up to date. I just can't figure this one out. |

Hi Torey and welcome to Astahost.
It will be difficult to tell you exactly where that option is to disable the onboard video unless someone has the same BIOS on their computer. You have to search around. Expand all collapsed entries or go into any Advanced options if available. It's in there somewhere, you just need to look closer. See if you have something like 'Onboard Devices/Peripherals'. Make sure you plugged the monitor cable into the onboard until you can disable it |
