Alright, the question is, what is the easiest combination of background colors to font colors on the eyes? (what causes the least amount of strain)

A while back I remember reading something that said that black text on a white background is harder to read then white text on a black background, and when I asked a webmaster friend of mind he said that he prefers black text on grey bg

so, assuming a webpage that consists solely of colored text and a colored background, what are the best choices? white on black? black on white? black on grey? or some other combination? (or am I just going a bit too far out there with thinking about people's eye strain when tehy view my page? o.0)

I haven't really thought about it, but I guess most colors on black, other than white cause strain. Blue on white seems to do fine for me, but so does black on white and white on black. I guess just ask around or maybe put a poll on your site to see what your viewers think.

It all depends on what the eyes are used to seeing. Everyday reading materials - books, magazines, newspapers etc - are almost always dark coloured text on a light background, so if your site is aimed at a very general audience that's probably the way to go. Middle aged and older people are generally more conservative - I know my mom complains non stop when she has to read bright coloured text, especially on a dark background. But younger people normally won't have a problem with that.

The other issue is the theme and ideas of your site - pastel colours for a Halo clan probably wouldn't be great. It basically all comes down to personal preference and aesthetics - if you like it, somebody else should too. Friends are good sources of second opinions.

Yes, I agree: it depends (at least to some degree) on what your eyes are used to seeing.

However, it depends a lot on the contrast between teh two colors. white and black contrast a lot so they strain your eyes. Black on gray is good that way as there is not as much of a contrast between the two, black and gray.

Anotehr factor I think is the brightness of the colors, if they are really light (for example, yellow on white) or if they are dark (violet on black) it gets increasingly harder to see clearly and comfortable.

The third factor is simply color. The color should not be too warm or cool, but somethere in the middle.

There are a few websites that when i visit them I can feel the strain leave my eyes, one of them is aboho (http://www.aboho.com/forum).

I suggest go around the web and try to find some websitees that are pleeasing and comfortable to look at, that way you can find a good combination or combinations.

Hmm. How I usually do it is look at the range of greys that are web-safe. If I have a website with a white background, I'd have text (assuming I want black/grey text) that is the grey closest to black, which is #333333. If I have a black background, I'd use the grey closest to white, which is #cccccc. And if I had a light coloured background, I'd use black straight, a dark coloured background would get white straight.

That way I know there's consistency, all my background-text colour combinations have roughly the same level of contrast. Saves all the thinking about colours and stuff.

On the popular maddox.xmission.com website, he claims that he uses a black background and yellow or white text because it's easier on the eyes than a light background. I think that's about right.
