![]() HAPPY BIRTHDAY LINUX This is the text of the usenet post that Linus Torvalds sent on 25 AUG 1991. CODE Hello everybody out there using minix - I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things). I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-) PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(. Linus Benedict Torvalds, Aug 25 1991 You've come a long long way from there, Tux. And thanks for scaring the pants of Microsoft along the way. |

Great to see Linux kicking it 15 yrs later!
Lets hope Vista dies on its ass like I think it will and get more people over to Linux when 64bit pcs become more common and people lose faith in the MS OS. Also any new business would be stupid these days to build thier systems on a MS platform or use MS products on the users desktops. If more business that switch over it will then bring many home users to the party too because of using it at work all day long and getting used to it. Lets hope were all here in 5 yrs time to see Linux rise to be the KING of the OS. |

Lol 15 years!! And people still can't agree on how to pronounce the name
I'm ashamed to say i'm not a regular linux user, but I can't stand servers that are built on NT and stuff! They're always slow and crappy. |

TOASTERS. gotta laugh... what do you think Linus would say if i went back in time ( in my delorian ) to theday he wrote the first line of code, and told him that one day, someone would port this software to my toaster. |
