I think uni.cc is a great dns service provider. It's easy to sign up, and you can get free dns service without ads! It's down right now though... But, good news! I just checked the site, and the "down" status seemed to have improved a bit, proving that the Webmaster is indeed trying to fix the site, or something... When it goes back up, if the service is still available, register for a domain!

But, if it doesn't come back up, you can use one of the http://www.smartdots.com 's domains, like
  • http://www.Your-Name.net.tc
and more (found here). They require an ad, but the type is selectable. I don't quite like it though, I don't know why. But it's an alternative for getting your free short domain name. cool.gif

Nice list...thanks smile.gif

Everybody knows about .tk (which isn't that great, with the popups) but one of my favorites is r8.org

r8.org is a free redirector service, similar to dot tk. You can register as many domains as you want, either as r8.org or ne1.net - there are no popups, ads, or anything whatsoever, and I tend to like it the most.

If anybody else knows of url redirectors/forwarders...please post them! smile.gif

another redirector is cjb.org and it also provide mail forwarding and pop mail give it a try u may appriciate the service

but in my oppinion .tk is the best 1st level domain redirector, abt the popups most of the users use popup blocker if not give a try to www.banpopup.tk

Actually, r8.org, cjb.net and .tk are not truely dns services...when you go to one of the sites they forward to and View Source it, you will see that it's not actually the page's source. A real DNS service provider should look invisible, not affecting your site at all.

Nobody said "true" wink.gif

We said redirectors. Which is exactly what they are...of course you can still view the page source and see where the site is coming from, but I have no problem with that. As long as I don't have to type in such a long url, it's cool with me biggrin.gif

Speaking of uni.cc though, is it back up yet? Anytime it will be back up? The site for it is simply http://uni.cc, right?

Cheers! smile.gif

Sorry, I was only trying to keep this topic on topic. If you have more links to DNS service providers instead of redirectors, please post them here for us to share. smile.gif

The link you have is correct, and sadly, uni.cc isn't back up yet...

Good News!!! biggrin.gif

uni.cc came back up yesterday, April 2! The site is up, but they say that they will not begin to accept domain registrations until April 5th. At least now the wait is definite!

They are now just an ordinary redirector; they no longer have a service which runs directly through the public DNS system, as they used to. Does anyone know where I can find such a service?

In other words, I'm looking for a free service which will give me a subdomain name and allow me to attach DNS server names to it, as uni.cc used to have. I could then use it with the name servers here, yet still move my site someplace else later if I wanted to.

Thanks.
Cassy.

Cassy, I'm trying to look for another free DNS service provider too... But I wouldn't give up hope on uni.cc, as they said they would try to bring back DNS as soon as possible. I have an old DNS registered, but I have wanted to change the name since before Feburary.

I hope something comes up soon.
