Are there any mmorpgs out there that are like... fighting games? By fighting, I don't mean the rpg style fighting, but I mean the mortal kombat or dbz budoukai style. I think that if this genre doesn't exist, that it'd be really interesting. Has anyone seen any anywhere? If not, I'm going to make one ^_-. The only problem is finding the proper 3d mmorpg engine...

The King of Fighters Online. Here is the NeoSeeker resource page for this game: http://www.neoseeker.com/Games/Products/PC/kof_online/
Its development started as early as 2001, but its developer, a Korean company called Uno Technology, broke from SNK Playmore, the owner of The King of Fighters series, during KOF Online's public test in 2003. Uno Technology later closed the public test to "make improvements" on the game. I can't find any further reports, nor can I find its official website. Perhaps it aborted... |

I can't imagine an MMO fighting game being that good. It would either just be a world to roma in and then do small fights (2-10 people or whatever) or huge brawls. While either in and of themselves could be entertaining for a bit, they dont seem like basing an entire game around it would be that great. But thats just my opinion. I like my MMO's with a bit more material to work with.

Well it would still have all of the other features that makes a good mmorpg, but the fighting system would be that of a fighting game. When players entered battle mode, all other players and events would vanish from the screen temporarily like the system in Dofus Online, and hit bars would come up, at which point it would be either hack and slash like soul calibur, or hand to hand like mortal kombat. There would be special moves that took different keyboard button combinations, ect. There would need to be one of those "reach the top of the temple" things where you fight your way to the top of a big arena building and compete against other players for the crown and cash prizes, like in Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door, and other various things that had minigames like that. It /would/ be dull if it was ONLY fighting and no other gameplay to it, but the battle systems of today's mmo's seem so boring, especially that of runescape.

MMORPG fighting games
An Fighting Game Mmorpg? Replying to Ntrix I'm playing Rakion... More fighting than RPG, since there is no open world but scenarios or arenas to gain experience. I'm still looking for the best mmorpg that has a decent fighting system and lets a rookie player compete with veteran ones regardless the level. Lineage is a good game with good graphics, chat, open world, trading, fishing, pvp but has not a real dynamic fight system. However since the leveling is slow when you get into a fight it gets your heart pounding as there is lots of lost exp if you loose :) A mix of these games would be the killer. Since I cant find my mixed game I would like to add some other ideas Ive seen. Keeping the medieval style the game should add some upgradeable ancient magic vehicles or to command trainable creatures to ride and some big mecha Melefs and some armours that have special weapons like Guyver with which you add a fast paced race and shooter experience. Add weapons that use enchanted jewels to include side attack effects or special attacks or enhancements. To further increase battle strategy add some stamina gauges and defense or weapon and armor break gauge. At least a block-resist, trick-evade, attack-grab button. One hit kill blows, multiple combos, multiple hits attacks, cripple attacks. And more combat-tactical oriented skills that take advantage of surroundings or nearby cretures. Also skills should cancel, reflect, fusion or increase each other and can be made stronger enter a second phase or resisted by button smashing. Also trigger effects to lay magic traps on ground for an ambush. Skills should also be customizable; casting speed, damage, effect lenght, hit speed adding exp to it. To add more power to spell or direct attack hold button for longer casting-charge time. Add no fixed classes to learn anything you want spending your exp. At stats or skill points. Well this brick is heavy enough, still plenty to add but that would make it more interesting for me. -Phillipe |

An Fighting Game Mmorpg? I have a vision of an MMORPG with the layout of Jade Empire, where you develop your fighting style and get items. Then in duels/fights with NPCs monsters or players it turns into a Tekken fight, with a back view like the recent DBZ fighting games. So at the same time, people are watching you fight , I think that sounds pretty cool. -Leon |
