Well ubuntu 7.10 is coming out soon (the final one, a beta is currently out and available for download right now if you would like, and you can check it out at http://www.ubuntu.com ) But I was wondering what everybody has heard about it, or if anybody has tried it?

I have liked the previous releases, but should I bother with upgrading to this one, or should I just stick with the older release until the support is gone?

It looks like they have done a lot of improvements in the way of eye candy for this release with 3D effects and such enabled by default. And the restricted drivers manager seems like a nice feature to have. And with me having a laptop, and sometimes hooking it up to another screen, the fact that there is a graphical screen manager thing is also a plus. So for me it seems like there are a lot of improvements in terms of features for usability and such. I so far think it is a move towards and even more usable linux distribution that has the potential to become even more mainstream than it already is. I just am continually amazed by how well ubuntu seems to be at getting things right, although I have not tried this release yet, from the description of the features it sound like it is going to be a good one. Has anybody tried the beta of it?

Personally I'm still in favour of Kubuntu, as I prefer KDE to GNOME... (although my main distro remains openSuSE)... But I plan to upgrade to Gutsy Gibbon on my Kubuntu system quite soon...

However, I usually wait slightly past RC1 releases because of what you mentioned -- mostly lack of support...

Since the official release seems to be a few days away (October 18th, 2007??) I would probably wait just a bit longer... unless you have a quick backup/ rollback procedure, or you just really like to stay on top of things : )

perhaps I shall do a full install on a test system with Gutsy on the 18th... tho it's gonna be hard to peel me from the openSuSE releases in general...

Additionally to your list of new features, the ".deb" support has caught my eye as I was having trouble finding certain softwares easily available for Kubuntu... And straight Debian never as much appealed to me... The main example being my trouble with "The Matrix" screensaver...

Anyways... I will probably post again (maybe later tonight) if I get my other system up and running... although if anyone knew beforehand whether I would have to re-download the restricted-formats for Amarok, K3b, XMMS, etc... that would be nice... as my test system has no simple connection to the internet other than dragging the whole machine closer to my router... : (

I have had to do that before (drag the computer closer to the router for an internet connection)....

Anyway, I downloaded the liveCD beta, and it seemed to work really well on my new laptop, which is a plus (I haven't tried linux on it yet), but it did a really good job with it, so I may just wait for the official release, and then go right away and download it...although i'll have to be careful to install grub to the correct place, as I want to keep my windows bootloader at the moment... (as I have vista, and don't feel like trying to deal with issues with having grub)...

You could've installed Linux on top of a virtual machine like Microsoft VirtualPC for free.

I agree that Ubuntu is the best distro with Gnome, but I also prefer KDE, even though I am not using Linux as much as I used to in the past, I am using Arch Linux compiled with KDE and I don't really have anything bad to say about it. wink.gif

I have to admit that I haven't tried KDE in a while, but I didn't like it as well as Gnome....

When I initially tried it, I liked it a lot, because it seemed to resemble windows a lot more than Gnome did on many distributions, and was easy to configure and change how it looked so that I liked it.

But when I switched to using ubuntu, i started using gnome, and found it to perform better on my computer...It just seemed like it ran smoother and faster than KDE did...does anybody else notice any speed differences between the two (in either direction?)?

But not too many days to go here for the official release!
