All linux distros are ok to connect to the net. There should be no problem connecting to your modem. I use suse sometimes and I have a motorola adsl modem. Suse has probably the best security for your system because it is commercialy sold as well as open source.

Check out this forum thread on LinusISO.org. Someone with the same problem found a solution:

ADSL providers usually use something called PPPoE for authencation to see whenever you connect the net and to monitor your bandwidth. Luckily, SuSE has the easiest tool to connect to an ADSL network.
K Menu --> System --> YaST2 --> Network Devices --> DSL 1. Press Add 2. Make sure that the PPP mode is PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) 3. Device Activation can be set to whatever you want. 4. Choose your provider. If your provider is NOT found, press Custom Provider. 5. If you choose Custom Provider, enter in their information. 6. Press next again, unless you can type in customized parameters. 7. Done! Now try your ADSL service by going to Konqueror or Mozilla Firefox and type in your local Google URL. For me, it's google.ca To check if your internet is working properly, you can do these steps. 1. Open Konsole (or any shell) 2. Type in: CODE ping -c 5 google.ca *You may change google.ca to any URL.* If it's successful, it should show something like this: QUOTE root@penguin1:~> ping -c 5 google.ca PING google.ca (216.239.59.104) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 216.239.59.104: icmp_seq=1 ttl=237 time=114 ms 64 bytes from 216.239.59.104: icmp_seq=2 ttl=237 time=113 ms 64 bytes from 216.239.59.104: icmp_seq=3 ttl=237 time=113 ms 64 bytes from 216.239.59.104: icmp_seq=4 ttl=237 time=112 ms 64 bytes from 216.239.59.104: icmp_seq=5 ttl=237 time=112 ms --- google.ca ping statistics --- 5 packets transmitted, 5 received, 0% packet loss, time 4000ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 112.274/113.303/114.694/0.928 ms Enjoy! xboxrulz |

I also struggled quite a bit when I needed to install my CDMA modem in Linux. But finally I made it. But now I am not using Linux as my primary account.
The most amazing thing is that in Windows I need to install a hefty driver to install and make the modem detected and make it working, but if it is in Linux it is a simple text file (*.txt) that I just need to paste the data in that to a configuration file using any editor. But finding how to do that initially was a bit difficult for me..But now I am happy.. |

I see that your hardware problem is solved but i must ask why the fear of connecting to the internet? linux is built to be stable ( you're hosting account's server run's linux ) and it's pretty hard to get a virus on linux. You would need to actually TRY to get a virus.
And if you're worried about your laptop, an internet cable can't put out a significant amount of electricity to damage your laptop so i wouldn't worry. hopefully my input makes you feel a little better. |
