rapco,
I have a Western Digital in this computer and no problems so far. This is my work computer (my secondary computer) and they call it 80GB even though it's closer to 74.5GB: QUOTE Model WDC WD800LB-60DNA1 Bytes/Sector 512 Media Loaded Yes Media Type Fixed hard disk Partitions 1 SCSI Bus 0 SCSI Logical Unit 0 SCSI Port 0 SCSI Target ID 0 Sectors/Track 63 Size 74.53 GB (80,023,265,280 bytes) Total Cylinders 10,337 Total Sectors 156,295,440 Total Tracks 2,480,880 Tracks/Cylinder 240 Partition Disk #0, Partition #0 Partition Size 74.52 GB (80,015,491,584 bytes) Partition Starting Offset 32,256 bytes And I have a lot of older Western Digital HD's from computers we retired. Most of those are 42-4300MB but I have some that was in computers for 10+ years and I use them when repairing older computers with dead HD's. (I'm not changing my mind, I still like the Maxtor 10k better ) Nils |

In my 15 years of computer "experiences" I have found an abnormal amount of Seagate and Western Digital hard disks with faulty conrollers that seem to burn out after about a year or two. But really it probably all comes down to what manufacturer they are getting parts from and in all manufactured parts businesses, there are batches of bad parts. Through some cosmic force they always manage to sneak a few through and they end up in disk drives anyways. Even still all seem to last about a year - just long enough for the manufacturers warranty to run out. Oh well.
Good Luck |

This is an interesting question because hard drives have gone through so many changes from ten years ago that even manufacturers have left the HD scene. Asking this question is like asking what the best car out there is.
A long time ago there used to be competition in the US with the manufacturing of drives and the companies tried to out do each other. But since then the corporate world has changed and drives are mass produced in Singapore, China or Japan. Now people only care about how much the drive cost and how much storage it has. Cheap labor! |

Sorry intelboy, you're wrong about the warranties. Seagate has a 5-year warranty on their drives. They have great support, you can call them up and say "I have this drive and I ran out of cables." and they'll send you some brand spankin new cables for no charge. They'll also replace a drive if it craps out. I have a friend that bought a drive off of ebay and it was damaged when it got shipped and Seagate replaced it. Seagate makes good drives that are atleast in the running with WD and Maxtor, and I've never had a problem with one of their drives. If you can't decide I would choose Seagate because of their outstanding support.

Indeed, seagate is known for making good drives. I understand they are somewhat more pricey though.

I've used both Seagate and Maxtor drives. From my experiences, the Seagate drives work very well with minimal problems. My Maxtor drive occasionally has sector errors and whatnot, but so far so good. If I had to choose a single company, I'd go with Seagate any day. Can't complain about an old 300MB drive that was made in 1996 that's still running strong

I haven't had much experience with different drives, so I don't really have a lot of solid ground to stand on for this one... but I have to go with Seagate. I currently use a 120GB Seagate drive and have never had any problems with it. Also from what I have heard from friends and other people on forums, I am inclined to lean towards Seagate. To me it seems to be the more reputable brand, and seems to be one of the most reliable according to friends and other people. My choice may be a little biased, but it is the impression I have of this brand.

I run 2. One is a Seagate, and the other is a Western Digital. Both have stood up to the test of time and use, as they have been reformatted repeatedly; essentially both are reliable brands.
A little side note: anyone into video-editing should get two hard drives. You install all your software on one HD, and you save all your files on the other. This significantly speeds up the process, as one hard drive does not have to read and write simultaneously. With two, one is always reading, the other is writing, =more speed. |
